Wawasee Girls Capture Own Tournament

SYRACUSE - The Wawasee Warrior girls' basketball team improved to 9-0 after winning their Saturday tournament.

Carly Beer scored 18 and Lydia Carpenter 15 in the Warriors' 65-52 win over Garrett in the championship game.

The Warriors hammered Bethany Christian 53-37 in the first game. Beer scored 16, Aubrey Coy 12 and Carpenter 10 to lead the Warriors.

Carpenter was named MVP. Beer and Coy were named to the All-Tournament team.

The 9-0 start is the best start since the 1984-1985 Wawasee girls' basketball team.

The undefeated varsity Warriors have a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday game at state-ranked NorthWood.

Girls: Whitko 44, Churubusco 40

At South Whitley, the Whitko Wildcat girls' basketball team handed Churubusco just its second loss of the year on Saturday.

The game featured a matchup between two head coaches who know each other well. First-year Churubusco coach John Alcock was previously Ray Davis' junior varsity coach at Whitko.

Churubusco turnovers helped the Wildcats. Whitko had just 14, but Churubusco (7-2) had 25.

"We took them out of their game in the first half with our press," Davis said.

Despite going up against a 6-foot-1, 6-1, 6-0 Churubusco frontcourt, the Wildcats held their own on the boards. They were outrebounded by only one, 34-33.

Whitko's Stephanie Warner, who hit 7 of 10 from the floor in the second and third quarters, led Whitko with 16 points. Kelly Osborn and Melissa Sands, who both missed much of the second quarter with foul trouble, finished with eight points each.

Churubusco had its chances to win - the Eagles made only 13 of 34 free throws (38 percent).

Whitko, 4-3, travels to Homestead for a 6:15 p.m. Tuesday game.

Tippecanoe Valley 40

At Mentone, state-ranked Valparaiso outscored Tippecanoe Valley 23-13 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 19-point win.

With six minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Vikings trailed by only four, but they could not get any closer to No. 10 Valparaiso.

Megan Parker scored 25 to lead Valparaiso. Brandi Fisher led Valley with 11 points, and Kara Tucker had eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.

"We were happy with the way played against a good team," Valley coach Mike Walters said.

Valparaiso won the junior varsity game 41-19. Brenda Rose scored six for Valley.

Valparaiso is 7-1.

Tippecanoe Valley, 2-5, hosts Triton at 6:15 tonight.

At Nappanee, the Warsaw Tiger freshman girls' basketball team lost to the Panthers by 12 on Saturday.

Christy Colt scored seven and Nerecia Taylor six for the Tigers.

Warsaw, 3-3, has a 6:30 game at Goshen tonight.

Boys: LCA Goes 1-2

The Lakeland Christian Academy boys' basketball team finished with a 1-2 record last weekend.

Community Baptist beat LCA 98-44 on Friday. Ryan Andrew and Nate Pletcher each scored 15 for LCA.

Trinity defeated LCA 80-24 on Saturday. Aaron Jones scored 11 and Andrew six for LCA.

LCA bounced back to beat Portage 79-54 in the second game on Saturday. Andrew scored 30, Jones 19 and Nate Pletcher 15.

LCA, 2-6, is at Cornerstone on Tuesday. LCA hosts Elkhart on Thursday.

Wrestling

Warsaw Places Third In Invite

At Elkhart, the Warsaw Tiger wrestling team took third place in Saturday's eight-team Elkhart Memorial Invitational.

Jimtown won with 435 points and was followed by Elkhart Memorial (406) and Warsaw (298). Manchester also competed in the tournament, and the Squires finished last with 97 points.

No Tiger wrestlers placed first, but Warsaw did have three wrestlers finish second.

Adam Harter (112 pounds) was 4-1 on the day, good for second place. Robbie Boley (125) and Matt Zellers (152) also went 4-1 to take second places.

Two Tigers placed third. Scott Snyder (103) and Evan Miller (275) each went 3-2 en route to finishing third.

No Manchester Squire wrestler finished better than fifth place.

Elkhart Memorial's Mike Kratzer (145) was named the MVP.

Warsaw competes in the Mishawaka Invitational at 8 a.m. on Dec. 27.

Manchester, 3-7, competes in a 5 p.m. Tuesday match at North Miami.
