Fourth-year Warsaw boys tennis coach Rick Orban said the goal of his team is to duplicate what it did last year - win a regional chamipionship.

The Tigers took the first step in doing so Thursday afternoon, opening the Warsaw Sectional with another convincing 5-0 win over rival Wawasee, a match that took little more than an hour to complete.

The win improved Warsaw to 9-5 on the season. When the Tigers battle Valley today at 4:30 p.m. they'll be playing for their fourth straight sectional championship.

Valley advanced to today's sectional final by beating Churubusco 5-0 in Thursday's other semifinal match. The win improved the Vikings to 7-9 on the season.

"I know their head coach and their assistant coach," Orban said of Valley's Rod Hamman and Jack Shambaugh. "Valley is a well-coached team, they always have been. It'll be a good match. The kids will have to come to play."

It certainly looked like the Tigers came to play Thursday afternoon, beating Wawasee 5-0 for the second time this season. Warsaw won 6-0, 6-0 on all five courts when they beat the Warriors in Syracuse on Sept. 11.

They didn't accomplish that last night, but the Tigers were still too much for Wawasee to handle, as the Warriors finished their season with an 0-15 record.

"I told the kids anybody can beat anybody on any given night," Orban said. "I told them we still have to play and stay focused. I thought they did a good job of staying focused tonight."

Zach Tucker was the first Warsaw player to finish off his opponent, beating Wawasee's Nathan Brady 6-0, 6-1 in 32 minutes in No. 3 singles action.

At No. 1 singles, Warsaw's Deon Shafer beat Hayden Shock 6-0, 6-1, while Tiger Chris Finke defated Ryan Smith 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles action.

In No. 1 doubles action, Mark Krizmanich and Will coen beat Wawasee's Chris Brill and Vince Baumgartner 6-0, 6-0, while the Warsaw duo of Jake Wallin and Chase Byerly beat Ryan Hoover and Garly Windle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Doubles play was where Tippecanoe Valley set the tone in its match with the Churubusco Eagles.

Valley's Josh Foster and Kyle Lowe beat Trevin Geiger and Jesse Lich 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles match, while the Viking duo of David Geng and Isaac French defeated Alex Murphy and Matt Hall 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles action.

At No. 2 singles, Valley's James Bradford had little trouble beating Ryan Mey 6-1, 6-1, while Rosten Hamman beat Churubusco's Alex McDowell 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match.

In the only match of Thursday's sectional semifinals to go three sets, Valley's Landon Hendrix beat Zach Sorg 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
