Warsaw Suffers Two Losses In One Game
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
FORT WAYNE - Friday, when Warsaw boys basketball coach Al Rhodes was talking about Saturday's opponent, Fort Wayne North Side, he said its offense was built around Ross McGregor, the 6-foot-9 center.
And he was right. In a game that North Side won 64-60, McGregor, a senior, led the Redskins with 18 points on a 8-of-12 shooting performance. He also snared five rebounds.
Knowing what McGregor could do, Rhodes couldn't have been happier when the 6'9' center picked up his second foul with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter.
With North Side's biggest threat on the bench, the fifth-ranked Tigers were able to build a lead and establish a formidable inside game with Zach Nelson (6'6'), Steve Siebenmorgen (6'6') and Paul Finnegan (6'7').
That Tiger trio combined for 22 of Warsaw's first-half points. Warsaw led the Redskins 33-26 at halftime.
"(McGregor's foul trouble) gave us more freedom to roam around the basket in the second quarter," said Rhodes. "We were able to build a lead at halftime. But in the second half, he and (DeShawn) Belcher hit some key shots. They really had a strong percentage in the second half."
After shooting a dismal 8 of 23 (34.8 percent) from the field in the first half, North Side finished the game with a more respectable 21 of 46 (45.7 percent).
Warsaw shot 15 of 25 (60 percent) in the first 16 minutes, and 26 of 46 (56.5 percent) for the game.
Siebenmorgen led the Tiger scoring attack with 16 points. Junior Trent Martin added 11 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Finnegan finished with 10, all in the first half.
But McGregor wasn't the only one on the bench with trouble in the first quarter. After Warsaw senior Chris Wiggins made good on his second three-pointer of the game, a basket at the 6:23 mark that gave the Tigers an 8-2 lead, he went to the bench for the rest of the game with what Rhodes said was a severely sprained ankle.
With Wiggins on the bench and McGregor on the floor, the Redskins were able to turn the momentum's swing in the second half.
After a Siebenmorgen field goal at the 5:16 mark of the third quarter that pushed Warsaw's advantage to 40-33, North went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a rebound and bucket by Belcher with 3:08 remaining in the third stanza.
The Redskins outscored Warsaw 19-11 in the third quarter to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a one-point advantage, 45-44, going into the final frame.
And in the final frame the Tigers were outscored 19-6.
McGregor put the Redskins up 47-44 with 18 seconds off the fourth-quarter clock. Martin answered with a bucket of his own at the 7:29 mark, and Warsaw was was within one.
Belcher put North up 50-46 with 7:02 remaining in the game. And again Martin answered, this time with a trey that brought the Tigers within one.
Siebenmorgen tied the game at 53 with 4:05 remaining, but Corey Smith put the Redskins up again before another Siebenmorgen field goal brought the Tigers within one at the 3:16 mark. Siebenmorgen went to the charity stripe but failed to tie the game with the three-point play.
After the Tigers missed on late free throw opportunities, the Redskins put the game away at the free throw line.
Two free throws with 49 seconds remaining by John Stineburg, and two more with 35 seconds on the clock by Brandon Conway, put North up for good, 62-55.
Martin's third three-pointer of the game brought Warsaw within four, 62-58, with 21 seconds left.
"I thought Trent (Martin) had some big shots in the fourth quarter," said Rhodes. "Like I said, our performance was good and we played hard, they just played better."
A jump ball with 20 seconds remaining on the game clock gave Warsaw another possession, but it couldn't produce anymore points. Stineburg put two more free throws on the board with six seconds left, and Siebenmorgen made good on a field goal at the buzzer to account for the 64-60 decision.
"In the last three minutes it went back and forth," said Rhodes. "They nailed all theirs (free throws) and we missed two or three opportunities. We were able to earn some opportunities. We had a big steal in the end. The kids never quit. I'm proud of the kids, especially with the loss of Wiggins. We just hope later to have everyone healthy."
Warsaw (4-1, 1-0 NLC) will be at Northridge Friday. The win improved the Redskins' record to 3-2. North won 60-58 Friday over Fort Wayne Harding.
"We lost a tough game, but I'm proud of the way we played," said Rhodes. "We need to move forward. There's no time to feel sorry for ourselves. We have a huge conference game Friday. We can't afford any negative effect. We can only move forward from here."

Manchester Girls Win Wawasee Tournament
By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Writer
SYRACUSE - After falling to Garrett's girls basketball team in the first round of the Wawasee Tournament last year, the Manchester Squires got revenge on the Railroaders Saturday in the championship game.
The Squires came out on top, 63-54.
Garrett took the early advantage, taking a 7-1 lead early in the first quarter, but Manchester slowly chipped away at the lead.
By the 3:13 mark in the quarter, the Squires had tied the game at 13-13. Then Jessica Hicks hit a basket to give the Manchester squad a 15-13 lead with 2:37 remaining in the period.
At the end of the first stanza, Manchester held a slim two-point lead, 17-15.
Garrett's Megan Hardenbrook netted the first goal of the second quarter to tie the score at 17-17. Then the score bounced back and forth until 2:19 remained in the half when HIcks netted two free thorws to give Manchester a 33-31 advantage. Jennifer Jester hit a basket soon after to put Manchester up 35-31.
The Squires held on to their lead and went into the lockers with a 37-34 lead.
The Railroaders came to fight in the second half, netting the first two baskets of the second half to take a 38-37 lead.
However, Ann Harms and Hicks accounted for the next two scores in the game and Manchester went up again, 41-38.
Garrett managed to tie the game and then take the lead with four minutes left in the third, but Manchester fought back to take the lead once again.
This time the Squires would not relinquish that lead for the rest of the game. By the end of the third Manchester had built a 51-46 lead, and in the end, the Squires came out on top 63-54.
"We've had a full week of practice," said Manchester head coach Keri Nichols. "The girls were itching to play, and that showed today."
Hicks was 8-of-10 shooting for 19 points to lead the Squires. Heather Terflinger and Harms added 16 and 13 points respectively.
"Jessica was great for us today," said Nichols. "Her numbers did not jump out, but she did a lot of little stuff that people don't really notice."
However, the coaches in the tournament noticed those little things Hicks did and named her the MVP of the tournament. Hicks' teammate Ann Harms also made the all-tournament team along with Wawasee's Shanna Zolman, Mishawaka Marian's Emily Creachbaum and Garrett's Courtney Feagler and Jayma Smith.
Manchester advanced to the championship game by defeating Mishawaka Marian 54-51 in the first round.
Wawasee fell to Garrett in the first round, 65-41, but came back to defeat Mishawaka Marian 59-49.
Shanna Zolman led the Warriors in both the first-round the consolation games with 27 and 30 points respectively.
"We are young, so very young," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "We didn't come in not wanting to play, but for some reason it just wasn't meant to be today. We just didn't execute."
Manchester and Wawasee will hit the court again Tuesday night. Manchester will face Maconaquah, while Wawasee will host NorthWood.
