GOSHEN -ÊWhen Warsaw played in the sectional final game against Bethany Christian last year, the Tigers picked up a 2-0 win after scoring goals in the second half of the game
"It was destiny," said Warsaw coach Mike Getz. "We were in the exact same position last year, playing Bethany Christian at Bethany Christian, and we were shooting at the same goal."
Those watching the game may have had flashbacks from last season as the Tigers picked up a 1-0 win over Bethany Christian in the sectional final Saturday afternoon.
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half of Saturday evening's Bethany Christian Sectional final, Getz made an observation that turned out to be crucial.
"We noticed that their goalie played out of position on corner kicks," said Getz. "We talked about what to do about that at halftime."
When the Tigers went back out on the field for the second half, they took the advice to heart. Just 32 seconds into the second half, Tiger Ashley Kitchens capitalized on a corner kick for Warsaw's first and only goal of the game.
Kitchens stepped into the corner and curved the ball to the near goalpost. Bethany Christian's goal keeper got a hand on the ball but was unable to stop it from going into the goal.
In the regular season, Warsaw and Bethany Christian met and played to a scoreless tie. Through the first half of play, it looked as though Saturday's sectional final would have the same result until the goal from Kitchens.
"Our defense was a bit off today," said Getz. "In the second half, we picked up our play."
The win was Warsaw's seventh straight shutout, and it gave the Tigers their third straight sectional crown.
"Bethany Christian is a good team," said Getz. "They have only had two losses all year. We tied them at home earlier this year, they are a very good team."
The Tigers are 12-4-3 on the season and will travel to Argos for the regional competition Wednesday night. The Tigers will face off against Plymouth at 7 p.m.
The Tigers topped Plymouth 3-0 earlier in the year at the CCAC. Plymouth won its first sectional in school history to advance to Wednesday's regional.
