MONTICELLO -ÊIt wasn't the story book ending the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team would have liked, but it sure made for an entertaining afternoon at the Twin Lakes Regional.

After falling behind by 14 points in the first quarter, Tippecanoe Valley fought back to get to within two points of Highland.

However, the Vikings were not able to make a complete comeback and fell to the Trojans 49-46.

"One possession either way could have changed the outcome," said Valley coach Gary Teel.

Highland started off on the right foot by netting two straight three-pointers to take a 6-0 lead.

Valley's Sherise Denny sliced that lead in half when she hit a trey at the 5:13 mark, but the quarter belonged to Highland.

The Trojans outscored Valley 11-2 in the last five minutes of the first quarter and held a 17-5 advantage going into the second frame of play.

Then the Vikings seemed to wake up. Abby Shafer and Kathy Prater hit the first two baskets of the second stanza, making the score 17-9.

The Vikings continued to plug away and outscored Highland 13-12 in the second period, but the Trojans held a 29-18 lead at the half.

Valley come out of the halftime break with renewed energy. Tabitha Pratt and Rebekah Parker scored the first four points of the third frame, setting the tone for the second half.

The Vikings also got some foul calls to go their way early in the third quarter. Highland leader Julie DeMuth was called for four fouls in the first three minutes of the third quarter and sat out much of the second half of play.

Valley chipped away at Highland's lead throughout the third quarter as Parker connected on 6 of 6 free throws and 2 of 3 field goals for 10 points.

Valley ended the third quarter with a 7-1 run behind Parker and Prater. The Vikings outscored Highland 15-8 in the third to cut the Trojans lead to four, 37-33, going into the final frame of play.

"We came back against a state-ranked team," said Teel. That shows the pride in our kids. They never gave up."

Parker hit the first basket of the fourth to reduce the deficit to two points, 37-35, and put Valley right back in the thick of things.

However, Highland put DeMuth back in the lineup, and she did her job. She was fouled as she hit a shot under the basket and converted the free throw, making a three-point play and restoring a five-point Highland lead.

Highland's lead grew to as much as seven points early in the fourth, but with 57.3 seconds left in the fourth Parker hit a basket to cut the lead to five, 47-42.

After Highland's Lyndee Arnold hit a free throw, Parker hit another basket to make the score 48-44.

Then DeMuth missed the front end of a one-and-bonus opportunity. Parker was fouled near the basket and sank both free throws to cut the Trojans lead to two, 48-46 with 13.5 ticks left on the clock.

Valley quickly fouled Arnold, who hit 1 of 2 free throws with 10.7 seconds left, making the score 49-46.

Valley took the ball down the court, but was unable to connect on the final three-point attempt, falling just short of a complete comeback.

"We faced a team that was 26-1 last year and had three starters back," said Teel. "Their experience in big games paid off. Now we have learned from this experience.

"We came all the way back from a 17-3 deficit. That's a good testimony to our kids."

Parker led all scorers with 24 points, while her teammate Prater added 11.

DeMuth led Highland with 19 points.

Valley finishes the season 18-5. Highland moved on to the regional final game where it defeated Northwestern 57-47.

Warrior Boys Edge Warsaw For Sectional Swim Title

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

SYRACUSE - Wearing a green dress shirt, a pair of Khaki pants and soaked from head to toe, Wawasee boys swim coach Roger Karns wouldn't have had it any other way.

In Saturday's sectional finals at Wawasee Middle School, Karns and the Warriors couldn't have had it any other way.

Trailing rival Warsaw, and forced to win the meet's final event, the Warrior foursome of Nik Conley, Steve Dingeldein, Guy Simmons and Michael Cone swam a time of 3:20.52 to win the 400 freestyle relay and cap off a brilliant Wawasee comeback.

The win in the 12th and final event gave the Warriors their second straight sectional championship, edging Warsaw 258-257. Huntington North was third with 208, followed by Bremen (207), Culver Military Academy (131), Plymouth (127), Tippecanoe Valley (71), Manchester (41) and Rochester (25).

"We couldn't have won any other way," Karns said. "We had to win that last race and the guys came through. They were rockets. Give credit to Warsaw, they're an outstanding, wonderful swim team. They're well coached. They're just an awesome swim team. We always have great meets with them."

Said Warsaw coach Chris LaLonde: "It was their (Wawasee) day. Roger and I talked earlier and we said we both hoped it was us swimming for the championship again. All of our guys swam awesome, they have nothing to be ashamed of."

Both Karns and LaLonde were voted sectional coach-of-the-year.

The winning team or individual, as well as those who make the set cut time, advance to Friday's preliminary round of the state finals at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. The top four divers will compete Tuesday in the regional round at Oak Hill High School.

Wawasee will be represented at the state finals this weekend in four events.

Conley, a junior won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.27 seconds. Classmate Simmons finished second but advanced with his time 21.28, edging the state cut time of 21.93.

Conley also advanced in the 100 freestyle with his winning time of 47.79 seconds, while Simmons advanced in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 54.45 seconds.

"Conley and Simmons did an outstanding job," Karns said. "We had to do it at every spot to win this meet, and those guys were a big part of it. We were down 43 points after Thursday. I'm just so proud of all these guys."

Representing Wawasee at Tuesday's diving regionals will be senior Regg Beer, who won with a score of 361.45 and senior Mark Speakman, who was third with a score of 324.65.

Warsaw sophomore Will Kretsch advanced to Tuesday's diving regional, taking the fourth and final advancing spot with a score of 229.9.

At Friday's state finals preliminaries, the Tigers will compete in three swimming events.

The Tiger foursome of seniors Brandon Moore and Kiel Beehler and juniors Ryan Munsch and Michael Thallemer swam to the title in the 200 medley relay with a winning time of 1:40.13.

The team of Beehler, senior Brett Moore, Munsch and Thallemer won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.09, once again setting the school record.

Beehler will compete at state individually in the 100 breaststroke after swimming a sectional championship time of 1:03.74.

"Everybody swam real well today," LaLonde said. "Everybody was just awesome."

Warrior Boys Edge Warsaw For Sectional Swim Title

SYRACUSE - Wearing a green dress shirt, a pair of Khaki pants and soaked from head to toe, Wawasee boys swim coach Roger Karns wouldn't have had it any other way.
