Triton Has No (Cody) New Answers

BOURBON - With 3:02 left in Thursday's game, Triton senior Eric Disher looked at coach Joe Bennett helplessly and shrugged his shoulders as if to say, what else can I do?

The answer was nothing. Neither he nor any of his Triton teammates could do anything on this night to stop 6-foot-2 Tippecanoe Valley senior Cody New.

New scored 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and passed out five assists as the Vikings led from start to finish in beating Triton's boys basketball team 72-57. Senior Andy Martin scored 15, and sophomore Trey Eaton, who left briefly in the first quarter with a dislocated finger, added 14.

"Cody's a pretty good player," Valley coach Bill Patrick said. "When Cody stays within the offense and his shot selection is good, he moves well. He really hasn't taken a bad shot for two games now."

Triton coach Joe Bennett was just the latest opposing coach to run into the New problem.

"[New] was as good as any player we've played against this year, and his best attribute is he doesn't quit," he said. "If he misses, he goes after the offensive rebound, and because he's such a good athlete, he often gets it."

Valley hit 28 of 52 field goals (54 percent) in handing it to a Triton team that had won seven of eight and was playing on its home floor.

"Valley's well-coached, has good athletes and makes good decisions," Bennett said. "With those three combinations, they can beat anybody they play."

New scored eight points in the first quarter as Valley (13-5) built a 23-12 lead at the end of one. New, who had reeled off six points in a row for Valley when Disher looked over at Bennett, added eight more in the second quarter as the Vikings widened the spread to 42-25 at halftime. Led by New's 7-of-11 shooting, Valley hit 16 of 28 field goals (57 percent) in the half.

Valley's one hitch came in the third quarter, when it allowed the Trojans (11-5) to shoot 10 of 18 from the field. After stretching the lead to 55-36 with 2:39 left, Triton outscored Tippecanoe Valley 12-2 the rest of the quarter to close the deficit to 57-48. Jake Burnett fueled the run with back-to-back three pointers.

Triton appeared to have a chance to draw even closer as senior forward Joey Potter stole the ball at halfcourt with four seconds to go. He tore off toward Triton's basket with all Valley defenders behind him, the basket all but a formality. Except he left his open layup short, and it clanged off the side of the rim.

It was the only mistake Potter made as he led Triton with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Burnett added 12.

"I thought Joey Potter played a great game," Bennett said. "If he makes the basket, maybe it could have changed the momentum. But you'll never know."

The missed basket was the worst kind of rally killer, and Valley gladly accepted the reprieve. The Trojans could have started the fourth down 57-50, could have had the momentum because they were playing on their home floor and could have made a run to turn it into a game.

Instead, Valley started the quarter with a 13-4 spurt to turn a 57-48 lead into a 70-52 lead. The Vikings cruised the rest of the way.

Triton never could stop Valley from scoring inside as the Vikings hit 21 of their 28 field goals in the lane. New devoured the Triton guards who had the misfortune of trying to keep him in check. Several times New stared the guard in the eyes then put the ball on the floor and took it to the basket for layups. If he missed, he often grabbed the offensive rebound.

"I had the little guards on me," he said, "and I feel like I can make some moves to get past them."

The Vikings scored several baskets after rebounding Triton misses and whipping the ball down the court before Triton's defense could react.

"I thought we did a nice job offensively," Patrick said. "I had no complaints with that at all. It may have been our best offensive game of the season.

"I thought our best bet was to push the ball up the floor, because Triton passes the ball so well. We didn't want to allow ourselves to get stuck in a situation like [the 57-55 loss] at Caston, a low-scoring game, because Triton can score in spurts."

Bennett explained the problem easily.

"Bad defense," he said. "We let them penetrate to the basket too much."
