Triton Boys Slay Dragons

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

BOURBON - Without a doubt, Scott Sanders is the go-to guy for Argos' varsity boys basketball team.

The 6-foot-3 senior put together an impressive individual effort Tuesday night, but he certainly could have used some help against the Class 1A No. 2 Triton Trojans.[[In-content Ad]]Sanders was 10 of 15 from the field, scoring a game-high 23 points, but physical, pressure defense and a balanced scoring attack led Triton to a convincing 50-30 win over the Dragons.

"As good as he is, we've still got to have other people step up," said Argos coach Joel Grindle, whose team fell to 9-5 on the season. "I'm not a math major, I don't know the percentage, but 23 out of 30 is a lot. We need to have some other people step up. As a coach, that's something I've got to focus on. We can't ask him to carry that much of the load."

Senior Jeremy Weirick scored five points for Argos, while classmate Nick Helper scored the Dragons' other two points.

The Trojans, who improved to 16-0 despite playing without leading scorer Griffyn Carpenter, got 11 points each from juniors Austin Davis and Jordan Everett, 10 points from freshman Clay Yeo and nine points from senior Taran Holderman.

Carpenter, a junior averaging 20 points per game, has missed Triton's last two games because of a concussion.

Playing without its scoring ace, Triton turned up the pressure defensively. The end result was a 20-point win for the Trojans and 23 turnovers for the Dragons.

"I told the keeds we need to come out and play defense," said Triton coach Jason Groves. "Even though we were without Griffyn's 20 points a game, we can still come out and play defense. Anybody can play defense. And that's where it starts, defense is what gets our offense going."

The Trojans turned Argos' 23 turnovers into 20 points.

Triton point guard Ben Montalbano only scored three points, but as he has all season, came up big with assists and steals.

The 5-8 senior dished out eight assists and made four steals in the win.

Leading 5-3 early in the first quarter, Triton went on a 7-0 run, a scoring spurt capped off by a dunk from Yeo, and the Dragons never recovered.

The Trojans led 16-7 after the first quarter, 24-12 at halftime and 38-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

While the two teams were overly physical at times and attitudes flared up, there a was bigger story to the evening than the game itself.

The communities that make up Argos and Triton came together to raise money for Argos fifth grader Evan Johnson, who has hodgkin's lymphoma.

Students at both schools sold raffle tickets for a TV and an iPod.

To encourage Argos' students to sell tickets, Grindle agreed to shave his head if they reached their goal, which they did.

The two schools combined to raise more than, $7,700 for Johnson's family.

"This is a big rivaly, but at the end of the day, we can all feel good about helping someone," said Grindle. "When they first came to us about this, both coaches (Grindle and Groves) thought it was a great idea. We weren't selling that many tickets, so I challenged the kids. I told them if they sell 200 tickets I'd shave my head. They went above and beyone, they sold 800 tickets today."

Johnson has family in both the Argos and Triton communities.

"It's something everyone got involved in," said Groves."There's more to life than just basketball. People in both communities responded. Great communities and great kids, and everyone jumped in wholeheartedly and showed support."

Johnson was given a ball signed by players and coaches from both teams. The winner of the iPod gave the raffle prize to Johnson.

Triton hosts Northern State Conference rival LaVille Saturday, while Argos hosts Caston Friday.
