BOURBON -ÊPeople watching Tuesday night's boys basketball game at Triton may have thought they were watching a tennis match. The fast-paced back-and-forth game had fans twisting their necks to catch all the action in Triton's 72-62 victory over Culver Military Academy.

"That's the way we like to play," said Triton coach Mike McBride. "We like to play the up-tempo style."

The CMA squad kept up with that fast pace for the first two quarters, but halftime adjustments gave Triton the advantage and eventually the 10-point win.

Triton senior Josh Moore started the scoring for Triton with a basket at the 7:09 mark, and the race was on from there.

The Trojans went up by as much as three points in the first quarter, but CMA hung with them. At the 1:25 mark, Triton's Braxton Barton hit a basket to put his team up 16-13, but a 5-0 CMA run in the final 55 seconds of the quarter put the Eagles up 18-16 at the end of the first frame.

Moore hit another basket to open the second quarter and tie the score at 18-all, but the teams see-sawed back and forth through the majority of the second frame.

A three-pointer by Cory McClarnon with 3:19 left in the second stanza tied the score at 30-all. Then two free throws by Moore and another basket by Barton put the Trojans up 34-30 with just over two minutes left in the first half.

However, CMA's Kyle Levasseur spearheaded a 6-0 run of his own to end the second frame with his Eagles on top 36-34.

"They played well against our press, especially in the first half," said McBride. "They were well prepared for the press, and we had to make some adjustments at halftime."

McBride's adjustments had a profound effect on Triton's performance in the second half.

Trojan senior Todd Blackford hit the first basket of the third quarter to tie the score a 36-all.

CMA took its last lead of the game at the 7:20 mark in the third frame when Levasseur hit a basket to put the Eagles up 38-36.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Josh Moore hit a basket and a free throw to make the score 39-38 in Triton's favor.

Then at the 6:36 mark, a Moore free throw started a 6-0 run by the Trojans capped of by a three-pointer by Blackford.

The Trojans continued to produce offensively and by the end of the third frame Triton was in control 60-49.

"In the third quarter, we were able to go on a run and then extend our lead and take control," said McBride.

With a basket and a free throw to open the fourth quarter, Blackford increased Triton's lead to 63-49.

The Trojans didn't let down through the rest of the fourth frame to pick up the 72-62 win.

Blackford led all scorers with 26 points. He also added eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Moore netted 22 points, and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Trojans.

"Josh and Todd played well," said McBride. "Those two are playing very well together right now.

"Todd did a good job in the second half. He picked up some steals and played well.

"Josh did a good job rebounding and getting the ball to the basket."

The win makes Triton 2-3 on the season, while CMA falls to 0-5. The Trojans travel to New Prairie Friday for a Northern State Conference game.
