CONVERSE - Eric Swan and Chris Betten packed a one-two punch for Manchester's basketball team as the Squires rolled over the Oak Hill Golden Eagles 64-35 in a TRC Wednesday matchup.
Combined, Betten and Swan scored 33 of Manchester's 64 total points.
Betten caught fire in the first half, scoring all 11 of his total points in the first two quarters.
The Squires scored the first points of the game, and had an 8-2 lead after Steve Fawcett nailed a two-point goal to give the Squires a six-point advantage.
By the end of the first, Manchester held a two-point 14-4 lead over Oak Hill.
The second frame was scoreless for almost two minutes until Rex Reimer sank a three-pointer to spark a Squire scoring drive.
Betten and Swan then added 11 of Manchester's remaining 13 points as the Squires headed to the locker room with a 30-13 lead.
"Our guys executed very well against a combination of defenses," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "I think we're getting off to a good start.
"Oak Hill got into pretty good positions a couple of times but was not able to convert position into baskets."
After the half, Swan started the third with a bang as he nailed a three-point shot to get the ball rolling in the third.
When Betten was shut down in the third frame, Swan stepped up and scored 11 of his 22 points in the third quarter.
Going into the fourth, Manchester held a commanding 47-22 lead over Oak Hill, but the Squires were not finished.
The fourth quarter was much like the third as Manchester outscored Oak Hill 17-13.
The Squires' scoring attack was balanced in the final frame as six players combined for the 17 Squire points.
When the final buzzer sounded, Manchester was on top 64-35.
"The point spread is not indicative of the way the game was played," said Goshert. "I have to give a lot of credit to this Oak Hill team."
Swan led the Squires with 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Betten added 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Michael Hendrix was the leading defensive player for Manchester, adding five steals, four rebounds and four assists.
"We felt there were a couple keys to this game," said Goshert. "We knew we needed to defend their transitions, keep them off the offensive boards and handle their press.
"We did a good job of getting back in the transitions and locking them out of the boards. The press was iffy but all in all, they did not have many opportunities to run the press because we defended them well."
The Squires remained undefeated at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the TRC as Oak Hill fell to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Squires hit the court again next week as they host the county tourney Tuesday and Wednesday.
At 6-0 are the Squires right where Goshert wants them to be?
"No, but we're making strides," said Goshert. "There are a few things I would like to do differently, but as long as we get better each week in little areas I am satisfied.
"We are slowly progressing to the team we want to become."
