SYRACUSE - Phyllis E. Matz, 62, of Cromwell, died at 7:32 p.m. Dec. 20, 2009, in her residence.

She was born Feb. 4, 1947, in Chicago, Ill., to Ervin J. and Helen Louise Kramer Bolt. On March 22, 1975, in Winona Lake, she married David L. Matz, who survives.

Living most of her life in Kosciusko County, she graduated from Pierceton High School in 1965; Anderson College in 1969; and earned a master's degree from Indiana University, Fort Wayne, in 1973. She retired in the spring of 2005, after 28 years from Wawasee Community School Corp., where she was a teacher at Milford Elementary School. She had formerly taught at Syracuse and North Webster schools. She was a member of North Webster Church of God, where she served on the Mission Board; was Sunday school superintendent for a number of years; and taught Sunday School. She was a Court Approved Special Advocate, a foster parent to 12 foster children; and served on the board of directors for the food pantry in Syracuse. She was a recipient of the Kosciusko County Heart of Gold Award.

Also surviving are a daughter, Emily (and spouse Nathan) Fitzgerald, Fort Wayne; a son, Luke (and spouse Beth) Matz, Warsaw; two grandchildren; two sisters, Denyse (and spouse Ray) Williamson, Atwood, and Beverly (and spouse Mike) Smith, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two brothers, Ervin (and spouse Garlene) Bolt and Calvin (and spouse Debbie) Bolt, all of Warsaw.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at North Webster Church of God with Pastor Jeff Boyer officiating. Burial will be in North Webster Cemetery, Mock Addition.

Calling is from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Owen Family Funeral Home, Syracuse.
