Northridge No Match For Warsaw Girls

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Just like the all-time series, Warsaw's varsity girls basketball game with Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge Saturday was overwhelmingly lopsided.

In a clash for sole possession of first place in the NLC, the host Lady Tigers took control of the game with a 14-0 run in the second quarter and used the inside-outside combination of junior Kayla Stout and senior Kelci Freds to overpower the Lady Raiders 50-31.[[In-content Ad]]With the 19-point win, Warsaw improved to 10-2 overall this season and 3-0 in the NLC, while Northridge fell to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Lady Tigers, who now boast a 23-1 record in the all-time series against the Lady Raiders, hold a one-game lead over Elkhart Memorial, Northridge and NorthWood in the conference standings.

Concord, Plymouth and Wawasee are 1-2 in conference action, while Goshen is 0-3.

"This hasn't happened for a long time," Harter said of her team being alone atop the conference standings. "It's exciting for the girls, they've worked hard. I thought we came out and played hard tonight. Northridge is a good team, a solid team. We played with intensity, which is something we talked about before the game."

After Northridge cut the deficit to five, 14-9, the Lady Tigers went on a 14-0 that gave them a 28-9 lead midway through the second quarter.

Warsaw led 32-15 at halftime, as Stout scored 14 points in the first half and Freds added 10.

"That's when we're at our best," Harter said of the inside-outside combination. "When we get the ball inside, and if there's nothing there, then we kick it back out, that's when our offense is at its best. We were ready to go tonight. We got the ball inside to Kayla, and we got some big shots outside too."

Stout - an approprite surname based on her performance Saturday - led Warsaw with 23 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two blocked shots and an assist.

"Kayla has been doing a nice job all year, but tonight I thought she really stepped up," said Harter. "Defensively, she had her hands up and she was very active. It was nice for her to have that kind of game, and nice for us to see it. She played great tonight."

Freds, who hit back-to-back treys during Warsaw's 14-0 run, finished the game with 15 points and five assists.

Kaelee Sands chipped in with four points, while Creigh Ogle, Cendall Ogle, Beth Plummer and Sarah Shilling scored two points each for the Lady Tigers.

Warsaw's performance Saturday came after it had lost back-to-back games to Class 4A opponents Perry Meridian and Marion.

"When we lost those two games, we didn't really play that well," said Harter. "The good thing was that it showed us some things we need to work on. We need to keep doing the little things, and tonight I really thought we got our intensity back."

Warsaw finished the game 22 of 43 (51 percent) from the field overall and 4 of 8 from three-point range.

Northridge, on the other hand, was a dismal 9 of 42 (21 percent) from the field overall and 4 of 15 from three-point range.

Freshman Haley Schrock led the Lady Raiders with seven points, while sophomore Cedes Clifford chipped in with six points and junior Emylee Smith added five points.

"This is a good win for us," said Harter. "This is another step toward our goal of winning a conference championship."

Warsaw plays at non-conference opponent Carroll Wedneday, and then gets back in the conference schedule with a trip to Goshen Saturday.

Two games at the end of the month will be big in the Lady Tigers' road to a conference title, as they host Elkhart Memorial Jan. 26 and NorthWood Jan. 30.
