NLC Win Streak Alive For Warsaw

Warsaw's volleyball team won its 46th Northern Lakes Conference match in a row, hosting and defeating Northridge 15-6, 15-8 on Thursday.

Lisa Estep had 12 kills and two aces for Warsaw. Sarah Calhoun had 11 kills, and Alyssa Raphael had four kills. Ann Fribley had five kills, five digs and an ace. Melissa Bolles had six digs, two aces and 26 assists.

Northridge won the junior varsity match 3-15, 16-14, 15-13. Liz Owens had five kills for Warsaw, and Karla Bailey served six aces.

Warsaw won the freshman match 15-13, 15-11. Kelly Sisk had five kills and 11 service points. Jessica Hannah had three aces. The Tiger freshman team is 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the NLC.

The varsity Tigers, 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the NLC, host a 6 p.m. match with Columbia City on Tuesday. The Tigers are riding a four-match winning streak.

Whitko Clips Manchester

At South Whitley, the Whitko Wildcat volleyball team won its first Three Rivers Conference match of the season by beating Manchester on Thursday. Whitko won 15-12, 15-12.

After winning the first game 15-12, Whitko jumped out to what seemed to be a comfortable 13-1 lead in the second game. Manchester scored 11 straight to cut it to 13-12, but then Whitko held on for the win.

Amber Landis had an ace, six kills and nine digs for Whitko. Tisha Shepherd had five kills and four blocks, while Brigitte Goble had two aces, two kills and five digs.

Erin Groombridge led Manchester with five kills and six assists. Jodie Peden had three blocks, and Karmen Miller had eight service points. Amanda White had six digs.

Whitko beat Manchester 18-16, 15-12 in the junior varsity match. Stephanie Warner had two aces, Aly Frantz five blocks, Tisha Rowland 12 assists, Heidi Hull 12 kills and Amber Reiff nine digs for Whitko.

Manchester's freshman volleyball team dropped two matches Thursday, losing to Goshen and Wawasee. Goshen won 12-15, 15-6, 15-11. Wawasee won 15-13, 16-18, 15-11. Megan Sell had 20 points and 10 aces for Manchester in the two matches. The freshman Squires are 0-5.

Manchester's varsity team, 3-9 overall and 0-1 in the TRC, competes in the County Tourney at Southwood on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Whitko hosts a 6:30 p.m. match with Rochester on Monday.

Triton Trips Tippecanoe Valley

At Bourbon, Triton's volleyball team won its fourth straight match by beating Tippecanoe Valley 15-12, 15-8 on Thursday.

Jessica Kintzel led Triton with seven kills, while Chris Scott had six. Heather Barron was Triton's assists leader with 11, while Holly Hepler had 10. Hepler was 11-for-11 serving with two aces, while Diane Hatch was 8-for-8 serving.

Rhonda Doud led Valley with six assists, and Deb Burch was 10-for-10 serving with two aces. She finished with seven service points. Amy Nellans had three kills and two blocks, and Brooke Fisher also had three kills.

Triton won the junior varsity match 15-9, 15-10 to improve to 4-2. Jamey Bell and Kendra Blackford each had eight kills for Triton.

Triton's varsity team, 7-2, hosts the Triton Tournament at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Teams in pool A include John Glenn, Wawasee, LaVille and Argos. Teams in pool B included Culver, Triton, South Central and Bremen.

Valley, 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the TRC, hosts a 6 p.m. match with LaVille on Monday.

Goshen Downs Wawasee

At Goshen, the Wawasee Warrior volleyball team fell to 6-4 with a 15-8, 16-14 loss to Goshen on Thursday.

Lydai Carpenter led Wawasee with seven blocks, three of which were solo. Kari Beer had three kills, and Whitney Pilcher was 5-for-5 serving with seven digs.

Goshen won the junior varsity match 10-15, 15-4, 15-11. The junior varsity Warriors are 3-3.

Wawasee, 0-2 in the NLC, competes in the Triton Tournament at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Tippecanoe Valley 4,

Lewis Cass 1

At Walton, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings improved to 3-1 with a Thursday win over Lewis Cass.

Valley's Eric Love breezed by Nick Bowyer 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Viking teammate Marc Ellenwood defeated Josh Sanders 6-0, 6-2.

Valley swept the doubles matches. Matt Craig and Brandon Holloway beat Jeremy Hornbeck and Mike Whitesell 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles match. JayDee Parker and Mike Parker beat Tom Palmer and Matt Bauer 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles match.

Valley won the junior varsity match 5-0. Jeremy Shambaugh defeated Tom Piercy 8-7 (7-5); Bryce Gast defeated Nathaniel Martin 8-1; Jason Miller defeated Denny Baker 8-0; Grant Gibson and Charlie Manns won 8-4; and Aaron Hart and Aaron Martin won 8-0.

Valley hosts a 4:30 p.m. match with Rochester on Monday.

Wawasee won the junior varsity match 3-2. Wawasee swept the doubles matches. Shane Beer and Joe Rucker defeated Adam Fletcher and Matt Gorsuch 8-2. Blake Knisely and Josh Unruh defeated Sebastan Peers and Adam Ledyard 8-3. Also winning for Wawasee was Kyle Farrel, who defeated Phil May 8-3 in the No. 3 singles match. Wawasee's junior varsity team is 3-2.

Wawasee has a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday match at Warsaw.

At Mill Creek Golf Club in Rochester, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings shot a season-best 199 en route to their Thursday win over Maconaquah.

Valley's Kara Tucker shot a 45 to take medalist honors. Brenda Rose shot a 49, Mary Gast a 52, Kelly Montelongo a 53 and Wendy Tilden a 62. Tilden's score was dropped from the team total.

In junior varsity action, Valley's Ginger Ervin shot a 58, Erica Pontious a 65, Terra Weaver a 72 and Mandy Barber an 84.

Valley, 9-5, hosts a 4:30 p.m. match with Penn and LaVille at Mill Creek on Monday.

Soccer

Wawasee 5,

NorthWood 0

At Syracuse, Wawasee's soccer team improved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the NLC by shutting out NorthWood on Thursday.

After outshooting NorthWood 7-1 for a 1-0 lead at halftime, Wawasee had 20 goal shots to NorthWood's one in the second half. Scoring goals in the second half for the Warriors were Matt Stump, Jay Haugh, Niko Ioannou and Andrew Thornburg. All of them were unassisted goals.

Wawasee won the junior varsity game 6-2.

Wawasee hosts an 11 a.m. match Saturday with Lakeland Christian.

Girls: Concord 3,

Warsaw 0

At Dunlap, the Warsaw Tiger girls' soccer team dropped to 3-2 with a Thursday loss to Concord.

Goalkeeper Sarah Barber had 12 saves for Warsaw.

Warsaw's junior varsity team improved to 2-2 with a 2-1 win over Concord. Alyssa Burner and Katie Clevenger scored goals for Warsaw.

Warsaw's junior varsity team hosts a 5 p.m. game with Elkhart Memorial on Tuesday.

Warsaw's varsity team hosts a 4:30 p.m. game with Culver Girls Academy on Tuesday.

JV: Warsaw 3,

South Bend Clay 0

At South Bend, the Warsaw Tiger junior varsity team improved to 5-1 with a Thursday shutout of South Bend Clay. Matt Lafountain played a role in all three Warsaw goals.

Lafountain scored on a shot from outside the 18 to give Warsaw the 1-0 halftime lead. Aaron Hood scored Warsaw's second goal on a corner kick by Lafountain. Lafountain then supplied the last goal for the 3-0 win.

Warsaw's junior varsity team will travel to Huntington North for a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday.

Football

9th: Manchester 20,

Whitko 6

At Whitko, Manchester's freshman football team won its first game on Thursday.

Manchester rushed for 174 yards. Leading the way was Gary Young, who rushed for 80 yards on 11 carries. He scored a touchdown. Kurt Briner rushed for 59 yards, and he supplied two touchdowns and an extra point. Dusty Butterbaugh rushed for 33 yards.

Manchester finished with 190 yards of total offense.

Brady Burgess led the Squire defense with seven tackles and a sack. Young had five tackles and a sack, and Kory Rupley had four tackles.

The Squires have allowed just six points in their first two games. They put their 1-0-1 record on the line when they host a 4:30 p.m. game with North Miami on Thursday.

9th: Warsaw 13,

Plymouth 6

At Plymouth, Warsaw's freshman football team improved to 2-0 with a Thursday win over the Rockies.

Two big plays was all Warsaw needed.

Plymouth fumbled on the opening play, and Warsaw recovered. Russell Albert then caught a 41-yard pass from Greg Seiss for a touchdown just one minute into the game. Mike Albright kicked the extra point to put Warsaw up 7-0.

Warsaw scored its second touchdown in the fourth quarter when Marvin Farmer broke loose for a 46-yard run.

Farmer also led the Tigers in tackles. Mike VanLaeken had two interceptions.

Warsaw, 1-0 in the NLC, has a 6 p.m. game at Fort Wayne Northrop on Thursday.

9th: Southwood 13,

Tippecanoe Valley 12

At Mentone, Tippecanoe Valley's freshman football team rushed for 256 yards, but still the Vikings were unable to beat Southwood Thursday evening.

B.J. Hall scored both Valley touchdowns. Hall, who had 86 yards rushing for Valley, had a four-yard touchdown run and 70-yard kickoff return, also for a touchdown.

Also for Valley, Nathan Patterson rushed for 64 yards, Russell Rhamey 58 yards, Noah Silveus 27 yards and Derek Domenico 21 yards.
