Night Golf Outing Set For July 20, Sponsored by Baker Youth

So you're a good golfer.

How good are you in the pitch blackness of the night?

The Baker Youth Clubs Fifth Annual Night Golf Outing will be July 20 at Raccoon Run with registration at 9 p.m. Tee-off with a shotgun start will be at 9:30 p.m.

"It's pitch black out there," said Baker Youth Clubs director Scott Wiley. "Pitch black and dead quiet."

The golf outing is the youth club's largest fund-raiser of the year.

Each year, Wiley said, they try to tweak the event and make it better. For the second year, Wiley said, real golf balls that glow in the dark will be used rather than the rubbery balls used two years ago. Each team of four will get black lights to charge up their balls. Wiley said participants find the balls hit a lot better.

Also this year, fireworks will be shot off on occasion. The fireworks were donated by local companies and may be shot off every time some golfer hits a birdie or the like.

The greens on the golf course will be lit by luminaries. Candles in the bags glow for more than 15 hours.

From 9:15 to 9:30 p.m., the door prize raffle will be held before the outing, which will take place from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Refreshments also will be served.

Last year, Wiley said, 77 people showed up to participate in the golf outing, though they only had room for 72, but the extra five golfers were accommodated. This year, the outing is again limited to the first 18 four-person teams (72 golfers total) that register so there will be enough equipment for all participants.

Winning last year was the team of Dave and Matt Wolkins and John and Brian Elliott.

Cost for a foursome is $140 or $35 per person and includes glowing golf balls, use of a portable blacklight charger, greens fees, refreshments and a chance at the raffle prizes.

For $150, a person, organization or business can sponsor a hole or a tee box. Cost includes luminary bags featuring the sponsor's name circling the green, at the 100-yard markers and/or marking each tee area.

To be both a hole sponsor and for a foursome team, cost is $275, a savings of $15. Hole and tee box sponsors and golfers are still being sought.

Hole sponsors are also encouraged to light up their holes in different ways - neon or Christmas lights, for example.

During the golf outing, there are other ways for people to financially support the Baker Youth Clubs. For example, on the holes are "gremlins," who, if bribed well enough, will get your ball closer to the hole. Bribe them $50, and they'll even get you a hole-in-one.

"We had several people bribe (the gremlins) for holes-in-one" last year, said Wiley.

Even if a person doesn't golf, Wiley said, "it's fun. People look forward to it."

All profits from the outing go to the Baker Youth Clubs, a local nonprofit organization.

For more information, call Wiley at 267-7169, Ext. 2951, or the Baker Youth Clubs at 267-8771 or check the registration in today's Times-Union. Registrations also are available at Raccoon Run Golf Course. [[In-content Ad]]
