Milford Officers Get New Guns
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
MILFORD - Dave Hobbs, Milford town marshal, told the town council Monday the police department needs to update its handguns.
He said he contacted about six gun dealers and the lowest two quoted about the same prices.
Currently, the Milford police department has six handguns for the department and four full-time officers. However, one firearm is in evidence and another is getting repaired, so the department actually has only four in operation.
"I think it's time to get them updated," Hobbs said.
The types of guns Hobbs looked at are both .45 caliber but the Glocks with 13-round clips are $489 apiece and the Sig Sauers with seven-round clips are $605. Hobbs wants to purchase 15 handguns, because when the department has all its positions filled, they will have 12 officers in need of guns. There will be three extra.
"It's quite obvious to me the Glock would be better per magazine capacity," said Hobbs.
In addition, Hobbs asked the council to allow him to purchase 11 holsters for $120 apiece and 12 magazine pouches for $50 apiece.
The town council approved for Hobbs to purchase 15 Glock handguns from Keisler Gun Supply for $7,335, the 11 holsters and the 12 magazine pouches.
The council also approved for Hobbs' current gun to retire with him when he retires. Two of the other guns also will retire with their officers and the other three guns will be sold.
In other business, the town board:
• Approved the bid from Price Construction for the new pavilion at Waubee Lake Park for an estimated price of $13,315.
• Approved Tim McGee as the caretaker for Waubee Lake Park.
• Announced that anyone who lives within the Milford town limits who is interested in serving on the park advisory board should fill out an application with clerk-treasurer Charlotte Siegfried.
• Heard bids for the wastewater treatment plant should be let the week of Nov. 24, with bids awarded around Dec. 24. Once the bids go through, the town council will have to work out new sewer rates and an ordinance should be approved January or February.
• Approved the speed limit for Alexis Drive and Heidi Lane to be 20 miles per hour.
• Heard the new officers for EMS are: president, Deb Mast; vice president, Larry Mast; secretary, Sonya Tinkey; treasurer, Steve Moore; public relations, Scott Brown; and maintenance, George Rogers.
• Heard leaf pickup season ends Friday.
Members of the Milford Town Council are Douglas Ruch, Bob Phillips and John Lehman. Their next meeting is at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 in the town hall. [[In-content Ad]]
