Merritt Hyndman, 73, of 19 Yvonne St., Leesburg, formerly of Pierceton, died at 4:51 p.m. Dec. 23, 2009, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.

He was born Sept. 18, 1936, in Pierceton, to Leo and Bertha Gilbert Hyndman. On June 1, 1956, in Columbia City, he married Stella R. Shepherd, who preceded him in death April 2, 1998. He then married Joanne Thurston Snyder on Oct. 10, 2008, in Warsaw, who survives.

He retired after 40-plus years from Warsaw Chemical as a maintenance supervisor. He attended Dutchtown Brethren Church and he was also a former volunteer firefighter and Pierceton EMS for 47 years and former longtime chief. He was a member of Pierceton-Washington Township Fire Department, Cruisin' Hoosiers Car Club and Kosciusko County Fireman's Association. He was awarded firefighter of the year by the Kosciusko County Fireman's Association.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kris (and spouse Greg) Jensen, Cromwell, and Kelly Geiger, Pierceton; a son, Kim (and spouse Linda) Hyndman, Columbia City; a stepson, Edward Sult, Leesburg; seven grandchildren: Melissa Hyndman, Heather Geiger, both of Indianapolis; Jeremy High, Joshua Scrafton, both of Fort Wayne; Ashley Scrafton, Cromwell; Brandon Geiger, Pierceton; three step-grandchildren: Kale, Kirston and Kyle Sult, all of Kokomo; two great-grandchildren, Kalleigh High, Fort Wayne, and Mikaela Wilson, Cromwell. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Jack Worth officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
