After 80 minutes of play, Manchester (4-5-1) and Blackhawk (1-6-2) called it even with a 0-0 draw.[[In-content Ad]]"They've always been really tough competition for us," Manchester coach Carrie Clothier said. "So, for us not to lose is a good thing. We'll take a tie with them any day, because they've always been a really good team. Unfortunately, we couldn't get anything in the back of the net, but we felt it was a very well played game on each side."
It wasn't for lack of trying that Manchester didn't get the ball in the net, it was more of a lack of execution.
The Squires outshot Blackhawk 22-4, but only five of those shots were on goal.
"It's just a matter of crashing better and getting our hips turned to get a better angle on the shot," Clothier said about turning those shots in goals. "Some were just inches wide of the goal post. Those are things we need to keep working on."
Manchester's best opportunity came with 20 minutes remaining in the match when senior Hannah Sharfman got behind the Lady Braves' defense for a one-on-one shot against sophomore keeper Hannah Henry. However, Sharfman's shot when right into the gut of Henry.
Sharfman's break away was the only time the Squires were able to get behind the Blackhawk defense, which was clearly set up to keep the score low.
"They play really tough defense," Clothier said. "They have a lot of quick girls who are just able to control the ball. We just couldn't penetrate them and get the ball in the back of the net."
With the defense sagging back, Blackhawk only had junior Meara Capps as a striker, hoping to get one pushed ahead, but that didn't happen.
Instead, Blackhawk's only shot on a goal came when senior Jenna Wharton lobbed a direct kick right in front of the Lady Squires' goal, where it found the foot of Capps. With just a toe getting on the cross, Manchester senior keeper Kelley Bowers was able to get the save, preserving the 0-0 score.
Manchester travels to Rochester Monday for a Three Rivers Conference game.
