He was born Aug. 20, 1927, in New Haven, to Herman and Flossie Calhoun Ellenberger. On June 11, 1960, in Huntsville, Ala., he married Marjorie P. Brandenburg, who survives.
After attending Poling High School, he served in the Merchant Marines from 1949-50, and then joined the U.S. Army. Living in Claypool since 1972, he retired from Dana Corp. in 1992, after 40 years of service, and attended New Hope Wesleyan Church, Columbia City.
Also surviving are seven children: Brian (and spouse Terri) Ellenberger, Holland, Mich.; Terri Ellenberger, Sparta, Tenn.; Rhonda (and spouse Mike) Anderson, Claypool; Dan Ellenberger, Kokomo; Dale Ellenberger, Marion; Diane Ford, Portland; and Dorena Ellenberger, Columbia City; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers: Loren (and spouse Norma) Ellenberger, Beckley, W.Va.; Larry (and spouse Vera) Ellenberger, Bryant; Mike (and spouse Gladys) Ellenberger, Bluffton; and Stanley (and spouse Carol) Ellenberger, Geneva; and three sisters: Iva Lou White, Hartford City; Carolyn (and spouse Elwood) Rouch, Middlebury; and Bonnie (and spouse Melvin) Fear, Fiatt. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with the Rev. Barry Faucett officiating. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery with graveside military honors by members of Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.
Calling is from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
