Warsaw has granted a lease extension through December that will allow Fellowship Missions to continue to house a temporary homeless shelter for women and children.
Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved the lease extension during Friday’s meeting.
The extension will allow the temporary shelter to continue to be housed at 337 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw.
Fellowship Missions originally signed a six-month lease with Warsaw Dec. 15 to rent the home until the end of this month to house homeless women and children.
The temporary women’s homeless shelter has been open since Dec. 18.
Eric Lane, Fellowship Missions executive director and founding member, attended Friday’s board of works meeting and requested the lease extension.
He said the lease extension is necessary to allow Fellowship Missions to complete its capital campaign to raise funds to purchase the building, and for renovation costs.
In March, Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals granted a special exception to allow a multi-family use in a commercial-zoned district to allow for a permanent shelter at the former Tri-Namic Printing building, 658 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw.
The special exception will allow for a permanent shelter at the location to house homeless men, women and children once funding is obtained and renovations are made to the building.
Plans are to move into the former Tri-Namic facility in December after Fellowship Missions purchases and renovates the property.
Lane said the organization is in the process of a capital campaign for the permanent homeless shelter and has raised $85,000 to date.
The purchase price of the former Tri-Namic building is $250,000, and renovations cost approximately $800,000.
Lane said since Dec. 18 there have been 68 individuals who have been served by both the men’s and women’s shelters, and 24 of those were served at the women’s shelter, including 12 children.
The men’s transitional home was started in April and is on South Buffalo Street.
“We currently have six women and three children inside the shelter as of Thursday night,” Lane said.
He said there are 14 men who are staying at the transitional home for men as of Thursday night.
He said there have been more than 2,000 meals served at both the women’s shelter and men’s transitional home, and 60 percent of shelter guests have been working either part or full time since Dec. 18.
Lane said Fellowship Missions is grateful that the city has allowed the group to lease the building.
People who want to make financial donations to assist Fellowship Missions in purchasing the former Tri-Namic building for a permanent homeless shelter can do so by mailing checks to Fellowship Missions, P.O. Box 382, Winona Lake, IN 46590 with the words “building fund” in the memo line, or donate online at fellowshipmissions.net
