Layne “Lane” David Warren, 91, Claypool, passed away at 10:11 a.m. Aug. 16, 2016, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Claypool, to Elva and Sylvia Jenkins Warren. On Sept. 24, 1950, in Claypool, he married Janet Elaine Carr, who survives in Claypool after 65 years of marriage. A lifelong resident of Claypool, he has always been a pillar of the Claypool community. He was a self-employed plasterer/drywall, co-founding Warren Brothers Plastering and Dry Walling in 1946. He served the country in the US Navy as a frogman during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was involved in underwater demolitions, cleaning harbors of mines in the Pacific Islands. Lane was honorably discharged at the rank of Baker Second Class in 1946. He was a member of American Legion Post 49, Warsaw. He was inducted as a member of the Claypool Lions Club on June 1, 1946, serving for 20 years and served as District Governor of Lions International, Lions Cancer Board, Lions Leader Dogs for the Blind and he served in dozens of Lions Eye Missions worldwide to Guatemala, Mexico and Africa. He also delivered ambulances to Mexico and Central America and was instrumental in building the Claypool Lions Community Building and Park Playground. He taught Sunday school for many years at Claypool United Methodist Church, where he was a member since 1941. He volunteered at food pantries in Silver Lake and Warsaw, helped build several homes thru Habitat for Humanity and delivered Meals on Wheels. He also volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and Red Cross Disaster Missions Assessment Team member in Hammond and Gary. He was a Claypool volunteer fireman for many years, beginning in 1948, and was fire chief for 10 years. He was a liaison for VFW and local churches annual Memorial Day Observance at Claypool Graceland Cemetery. He has always been humbly willing to serve his neighbor and those in need. Also surviving are one son, Jack (and spouse Kerri) Warren, Silver Lake; two daughters, Jill (and spouse Joseph) Thallemer, Warsaw, Judi Warren, Carmel; five grandchildren: Andrew (and spouse Jessica) Warren, Noblesville, Jaclyn Thallemer, Phoenix, Ariz., Michael (and spouse Leslie) Thallemer, Nashville,; Tenn., Tracy (and spouse William) Warrender, Philadelphia, Pa., and Brian Thallemer, Chicago, Ill.; two step-grandchildren, Branden Frantz and Brian Frantz, both of Claypool; two great-grandchildren, Mason Warren, Noblesville and Evelyn Thallemer, Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, Robert (and spouse Marge) Warren, Claypool and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Claypool United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Settles officiating. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery, Claypool, with full military honors by the American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 1126, Warsaw.
