Editor, Times-Union:

With the recent ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade, it’s now time for Hoosiers to come together and have a loving and compassionate legislative discussion about how we protect unborn babies and support and care for pregnant mothers.

The court’s decision reverses 50 years of judicial error and now returns the decision about abortion laws to the states. We are asking the state legislature to lead the way in the upcoming special session to redress Indiana abortion laws.

It’s not 1973 anymore. We as a people and a society have evolved over the past five decades – in medical science, our love and compassion for unborn babies, and in our view, love and care of pregnant mothers in crisis.

Since Roe was decided 50 years ago, medical science has proven that unborn babies have a heartbeat, develop brainwave activity, can hear, develop a nose, mouth, fingernails, organs and nervous system, and can kick, grasp objects and hiccup – all well before 15 weeks of development.

A recent poll by the National Republican Senate Committee shows that more than 70 percent of voters (Republican, Independent, Democrat) believe that an unborn baby is a human being. And yet, nearly 8,000 babies are aborted in Indiana each year, with nearly 3,000 of those pre-born children being babies of color. More than 63 million babies have been aborted since Roe v. Wade was imposed on the nation.

Less than one percent of those abortions are due to incest, rape, or danger to the mother’s life. The vast majority of abortions are sought for birth control, not a dire situation. We commit that every individual deserves to be born, that no one should decide a child must die to preserve a lifestyle, and that our pregnant mothers deserve our love and support in choosing life.

Mothers today have options and lots of support. In Indiana alone, there are more than 100 pregnancy resource centers. These centers, as well as a range of state and local programs, help pregnant mothers, giving them a variety of support that allows them to opt for successful parenting or adoption, rather than abortion.

We look to the state legislature to lead the way in the pending special session of the Indiana General Assembly so that the peoples’ voices may be heard in light of this historical SCOTUS decision. You can make your voice heard by texting the word, “unborn” to 52886.
