WINONA LAKE - Grace’s men’s basketball team has earned its second consecutive top-10 ranking in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
The Lancers landed No. 9 in the latest poll after accumulating a 17-2 record to start the season. Grace has been battle tested having played five games against ranked opponents this season.
Grace is one of four teams from the Crossroads League in the poll. Joining the Lancers is (No. 7) IWU, (No. 16) Marian and (No. 21) USF.
The Lancers will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Huntington.
Grace Continues Winning Ways
GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace’s men’s basketball team continued its charge through the 2021-22 season with an 85-49 rout at Goshen on Wednesday.
The win moves the No. 9 Lancers to 17-2 overall (6-1 Crossroads League) in one of the best starts in program history.
Jake Wadding earned the curtain call for Grace, pouring in 31 points with five rebounds and three steals. He shot 12 of 20 from the floor and 2 of 3 on 3-pointers.
The first half was evenly played, which did not ring true for the rest of regulation.
The score was level at 28-28 with just two minutes left before halftime. But the Lancers ended the half on a 6-0 spurt to claim a 34-28 lead at the break.
Wadding scored four of his 17 first-half points during the final minutes to give Grace momentum.
Grace (40 percent) and Goshen (37 percent) shot similarly from the floor before halftime. The Lancers did have a 21-16 edge in rebounding, and Grace assisted on 11 of its 14 made field goals.
Wadding shot 6 of 10 for his 17 points in the first half. Frankie Davidson scored 10 points as the duo accounted for 27 of the team’s 34 points.
The Lancers blew the game open with a monstrous run to start the second half.
Grace started the half on a 27-4 run, pushing the lead to 29 by the midway point of the half.
The Lancers’ defense was airtight. Grace did not allow the Maple Leafs (5-14, 1-6 CL) to make a field goal for the first 11:24 of the second half.
The Maple Leafs’ first field goal of the half came with 8:36 remaining.
Grace began to empty its bench by the middle of the second half, utilizing the sizable lead to employ the full roster.
Overall, 10 players scored for Grace. Ian Scott had 11 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block off the bench, and Brycen Graber had eight points and zero turnovers.
Frankie Davidson finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, and Cade Gibbs was on triple-double watch with 8 points, 8 boards and 7 assists.
Elijah Malone grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots, Brett Sickafoose scored seven points, and Carter Stoltzfus had 6 points, 6 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals.
