Paul Morales, the democratic candidate who announced his bid for an at-large county council seat last week, has decided to withdraw his name from the ballot.

Brian Smith, Kosciusko County Democratic Party Chair, said Morales did not think it was feasible for him to commit to the time it takes to run a race in a county as large as Kosciusko.

“Seeing the rigors of what it would take to be a successful candidate, he said he’s not going to be able to juggle it all,” Smith said. “He’s got two very young children, is the founder of a nonprofit and owns a photography business. He just said it’s better to get out now than just not be able to meet the time commitment that it takes to run countywide.”

Smith said he talked to a woman who is interested in running for Morales’ now empty ballot slot, and that he hopes he can have the potential candidate file before the Tuesday deadline.

Democrats running for the at-large seats are Noemi Ponce and Itanya Coon-Kauffman. They will face off against Republican Joni Truex, Sue Ann Mitchell and Kathy Groninger in the fall.
