After allegedly killing a cat that wasn’t hers, a Warsaw woman is facing a charge of cruelty to animals.

Patricia Jane Zeringue, 40, of 716 W. Center St., Apt. B, Warsaw, also known as Patricia J. Baca, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 10:42 p.m. Nov. 27 for cruelty to animals and intentionally beating an animal. Her preliminary bond was set at $5,250.

Court documents filed Monday list the cruelty to an animal charge as a level 6 felony.

On Nov. 27, Kosciusko County Central Dispatch received a call from a person reporting cruelty to an animal. Warsaw Police Department officer Jacob Metzger spoke to a woman over the phone who said that a second woman’s cat was killed by Zeringue on Nov. 23. Zeringue was staying at the second woman’s home at the time.

Metzger went to the second woman’s home who told him that Zeringue was in the residence. Metzger spoke with Zeringue who admitted that she killed the cat.

The cat owner said the cat was buried in the back yard in a cardboard box. She retrieved the box and showed it to Metzger. The cat was in the box.

Zeringue has since been released on her own recognizance with an initial hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 20 in Kosciusko County Superior Court III.
