SILVER LAKE – Two people were injured in a Wednesday afternoon car-pickup collision near Silver Lake.

It occurred around 4 p.m. on South Ind. 15, about 1,000 feet south of West CR 950S, according to a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department accident report.

A maroon 2006 Buick Lacrosse, driven by Ronald Prater, 63, LaVista Drive, Warsaw, was northbound on Ind. 15 near Kerlin Ford dealership, 9944 S. Ind. 15. A red 2011 Ford Ranger pickup, driven by Jarell D. May, 53, East Epworth Forest Road, North Webster, was heading south on Ind. 15 in the same area.

May said he saw Prater’s car start to hydroplane and he had no time to avoid a collision. He said the Buick entered the southbound lane of travel and May’s pickup hit Prater’s car head-on, and then the pickup went into the ditch.

Prater said he was traveling north and he thought something broke in the front end of his car, causing it to enter the southbound lane.

A witness said he was traveling south on Ind. 15 behind May. He saw a cloud of mist, then Prater’s car began spinning out of control, forcing the witness to drive into a ditch. He said Prater’s car barely missed the front of his vehicle.

May complained of pain to his neck. A passenger in Prater’s car, Cassandra S. Schnitz, 31, East Water Street, Akron, complained of pain to her back. Both were taken to a hospital by medics. No other injuries were reported.

Due to the damage, the car and pickup had to be towed.

Damage was estimated at $10,000 to $25,000.
