“May the Fourth be with you” is a popular catch phrase of Star Wars Day on May 4, the unofficial holiday celebrating the “Star Wars” franchise.

Not only is Saturday May 4, it’s also Free Comic Book Day. And one of the free comics this year is “Stars Wars.”

The national event is held the first Saturday in May to promote reading and comic books. It began in 2002.

Chimp’s Comix & Video Games, 919 E. Winona Ave., Suite 4-6, Warsaw, will host Free Comic Book Day locally for the 15th year from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, according to owner Nick Kelley.

Every person who visits Chimp’s Saturday gets two free comics from “a certain selection” of comics, he said. For each nonperishable food item a person brings in – which will be donated to the Salvation Army – they get one additional comic.

In 2018, the event collected 1,650 nonperishable food items for the Salvation Army. “This year, we hope to crush it and get more than 2,000,” Kelley said. “We’re asking for the community’s help to assist the Salvation Army.”

This year, Kelley said there are over 120 comics to choose from, with 54 being new. The remaining comics are hold-overs from previous Free Comic Book Days.

Of the free comics, 42 are all ages, two are for readers age 10 and older, 53 are for teens, 13 are for older teens and 11 are for mature readers.

“We’ll be adding more on the day of the event but those will be limited quantity,” Kelley said.

Besides “Star Wars,” other titles he highlighted will be “Pokemon,” “Minecraft,” “Justice League,” “Stranger Things,” “Spawn, “Spider-Man,” “Avengers,” “Doctor Who,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Deadly Class.”

Along with the free comics, Chimp’s also will have some sales. Normal back issues will be 35% off; graphic novels, 25%; complete runs, 20%; 50-cent comics will be 25 cents; and $1 comics will be 75 cents.

There will be giveaways, too.

If you make a purchase, you get a raffle ticket for a drawing of oversized “Star Wars” figures. There will be six winners, and the drawing will be Monday.

“Cosplay is encouraged and welcomed,” Kelley said, so everyone should feel free to come dressed in a costume.
