Editor, Times-Union:

Fellow Whitko Wildcats,

My name is Deb Thomas and I am running for Whitko School Board. I would like to introduce myself to those in the Whitko community that may not know me. I retired from Whitko Community Schools last November after working for the district 41 years. Throughout those decades I had experience in a number of departments: as a bus driver, classroom aide, cafeteria clerk, attendance clerk and office assistant. In 1991, I became the secretary and building level treasurer for Pierceton Elementary School.

It is important that we:

• Supply students and teacher with the tools for success

• Maintain our buildings and grounds

• Prioritize school safety

• Make our schools bully-free

• Increase enrollment

• Retain great teachers and administrators

• Expand the career academy’s offerings

• Continue area colleges and foundation partnerships

• Mind our finances and budget

We must remember that school budgets last for a year and that we need to look ahead to future needs and make sure we are spending money in the most effective way. We need to know where our funds are generated, what they are used for and when they are renewed. I feel my understanding of school finance would be of value as a board member.

If elected to the Whitko School Board, I will work with the other board members and the superintendent to guarantee Whitko offers the best environment for every student. That together as a school board, we can offer the best educational opportunities for each students’ success.

I currently have three grandchildren attending Whitko Community Schools. I am a Whitko graduate and my husband Roger and I have had two sons, Rodney and Jason, and a granddaughter, Jaycie, who are Whitko graduates also.

Thank you for your consideration!

Deb Thomas
