Editor, Times-Union:

It would take a strong stomach and a hard heart to be a Republican these days.

Today's Republicans, if not wanting to be accused of being a RINO, are expected to bow down to a twice-impeached, Russia-loving ex-president who can't stop lying about losing the election.

To be a Republican today you have to believe that the only solution to the slaughter of children with assault rifles is more guns everywhere. You have to believe that women should be forced to bear children against their will. You have to believe that killers who attacked the U.S. Capitol to upend our Democracy are the same as people protesting for their lives. You have to think it's OK to rally your base by attacking LGBTQ people.

To be a Republican today you have to give tacit acceptance to radical groups like The Proud Boys who have infiltrated your party at all levels.

To be a Republican today you have to believe it's OK to police teachers to make sure their version of Black history is acceptable to white people. You are expected to believe that making it more difficult for minorities to vote is to stop voter fraud, and not the only solution Republicans could think of to stop losing elections.

To be a Republican today you have to heed the rallying cry of individual freedoms while overseeing some of the greatest rollbacks of individual freedoms in history.

To be a Republican today ... no thanks.
