George Oliver Vitaniemi, age 79, of Warsaw, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019, at 6:24 a.m. in his residence.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1940, in Clinton, to William and Ann Secoy Vitaniemi. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 55 years.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Evans on Dec. 19, 1964.

He graduated from Clinton High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State in 1964 along with a master’s degree in education from Ball State in 1968.

During his life he was a high school teacher for a total of 35 years. He worked at Centerville High School, Griffith Community Schools, then Wawasee Community Schools, retiring in 1999 after 28 years. He was a member of Indiana State Teachers Association for 35 years.

He attended the Warsaw First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Warsaw; daughter, Ann Marie (Tim) Mangas of Warsaw, son, Jon (Kathleen) Vitaniemi of Manclova, Ohio; sisters, Darlene Hoggatt and Janice Bonebreak, both of Clinton; a brother, William Vitaniemi of Clinton; and grandchildren: Jake and Kyle Mangas of Warsaw, John Brennan and Patrick Vitaniemi of Manclova, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albert and David; and a sister, Diana Sillotto.

Services will be private, with Pastor Brian Smith officiating.
