SOUTH WHITLEY – Equalling their scoring output in their first six matches, Whitko High School’s girls soccer team scored its first win of the season Wednesday evening.

After giving up a goal in the final minute of the first half, the Lady Wildcats took control in the second half and beat the visiting Wawasee Lady Warriors 2-1.

Whitko entered the contest with an 0-6 record and had been outscored 28-2 in those matches.

Wawasee is now 1-8-1 on the season.

“Our first win a major morale booster for the team,” said Whitko coach Gary Sims. “This season has been very unique for us, we’re having to deal with the lack of subs, not to mention the injuries we are accruing due to the lack of subs.

“On the other hand, the ladies are learning how to play all of the positions on the field and the responsibilities that come with it.

“Our main goalie is out right now with a concussion due to a kick to the head against Rochester. Our scoring striker has assumed the goalie position and the training that comes with that. We are learning more with every game and continue to be positive toward the future.”

The Lady Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the match, which was played in hot and humid conditions, when Hannah Lancaster scored off an assist from Natalie Winters in the 40th minute of the 80-minute contest.

Whitko evened the scored in the 58th minute as Sidney Overmeyer put the ball in the net via an assist from Charlotte Cripe.

Cripe was credited with the game-winning pass when she connected with Audrey Bradford for the decisive goal in the 73rd minute.

The Lady Wildcats had six shots on the goal in the win, as well as three corner kicks.

Wawasee finished the match with 15 shots on goal and three corner kicks.

The Lady Warriors will be in action again Tuesday when they travel to Columbia City.

Whitko hosts Wabash Saturday.
