SOUTH WHITLEY — Last week, Whitko head football coach Phil Jensen said that his ‘Cats needed to play disciplined football and that they should not lose aggression in Friday night’s game against Northfield.

The Norse ended up playing the role as the aggressor.

Behind a pair of touchdown runs each from Northfield’s senior halfback Alex Haupert and senior fullback Jarrett Shafer, they ran over and around the ‘Cats as they fell 34-7 last night in South Whitley.

“They are a very good football team and they do what they do well,” said Jensen. “They make really good adjustments. We tried to make an adjustment, and they got an answer for everything, because they have seen it all.”

The thunder and lightning combination of Haupert and Shafer proved to be too much. Whitko had a couple opportunities to score in the first half, but turnovers ended up costing them those early chances.

“They have some really good athletes,” said Jensen. “They have a big, strong fullback and then they hit you with their speed. It is a pretty lethal combination, and their linemen get after it.”

Whitko would get their only points of the game in the third quarter. A strong drive was headed by a 43-yard completed pass from junior quarterback Ethan Schuh to senior wideout Drake Lewis. Schuh would connect with Lewis again a few plays later for a 21-yard score.

Despite the loss, Jensen praised his players for their efforts and not giving up early on.

“I told our guys at halftime that we were making strides in that we had two goal line or red zone stands, because it could have been ugly,” said Jensen.

The Wildcats now enter the final week of the regular season, in which they will take on Wabash before entering the first round of the postseason against Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.

“[Wabash] likes to throw the ball around, from what I have heard,” said Jensen. “The challenge to our kids, is do they use as fuel to get mad and to get better? We have to keep pushing ourselves because we still have games to play, and they need to keep getting at it.”

Northfield finishes their regular season at North Miami before visiting Southwood in their sectionals opener.
