IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament Cancelled

INDIANAPOLIS – Following Thursday’s directive by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb that all Indiana schools will be closed until May 1, the Indiana High School Athletic Association announced this year’s IHSAA boys basketball state tournament is officially cancelled.

“It is with great sadness and disappointment that we inform Hoosiers of the cancellation of the remaining games of the 2020 IHSAA boys basketball tournament series,” said IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox. “While the Association maintained every hope of continuance, it is now evident those hopes are now unreachable. Albeit there will not be regional, semi-state and state champions crowned across our four classifications, the heath and safety of our public remains paramount and our primary focus.”

On Friday, the IHSAA announced the remaining games of the state tournament would be postponed beginning with the regional games due to the growing number of school closures.

IHSAA Hopes To Have Abbreviated Spring Seasons

INDIANAPOLIS – Bobby Cox, IHSAA commissioner, issued a statement to coaches of spring sports saying the organization hoped to have a shortened spring sports season, even if schools don’t reopen in Indiana until May 1.

The statement was Tweeted by several sports teams and the Indiana Coaches of Girls sports Association. It quoted Cox as saying, “Currently, we still intend to stage an abbreviated spring sports program. The provisions to follow are contingent upon a return to school including approved gatherings of multiple students by May 1, 2020. From this point forward until May 1, 2020, all UHSAA spring sports (Track & Field, Unifield Track & Field, Softball, Baseball, Boys Golf and Girls Tennis) are now to revert to IHSAA By-Law 15-2, During School Year Out-of-Season. This allows parents and students to make an independent determination to seek activity that is non-school sponsored while schools are out of session. This is NOT an invitation to begin a limited contact period or conditioning which is school sponsored and against the directive of our Governor. If we are able to resume on May 1, 2020, the number of seperate days of practice necessary to participate in any interscholastic event, includng contests shall be set at five (5).
