SYRACUSE – Matt Carpenter, the head coach of the Wawasee varsity girls basketball team for the last six seasons, announced his resignation effective immediately Tuesday, as announced by the school in a press release.

“Thank you for the opportunity to lead the Lady Warriors for the past six seasons. I appreciate all the support that the school and community has provided for myself and the program during this time. After 16 years of coaching high school basketball, I need to step back and take a break,” Carpenter said in the release.

Carpenter will remain at Wawasee as a math teacher as well as the seasonal assistant athletic director in the spring.

“Coach Carpenter’s commitment to the Wawasee athletic department has been significant,” Wawasee Athletic Director Brent Doty said. “The impact he had on both our youth program and at the high school level will continue in the future. Most importantly, the life lessons he had fostered within his teams will continue to leave an impact on our student-athletes' lives.”

Wawasee will begin searching for a new girls head basketball coach immediately.
