Area teams won regional titles in two events in Tuesday night’s Kokomo IHSAA girls’ track and field regionals, and the Warsaw Tigers finished in the runner-up position in the team standings. The top 3 placers from each event will qualify for the state track meet Friday, June 3, in addition to Standard 3 qualifiers with times suitable for state-level competition.

Whitko’s Gwen Howard threw the shot put 41’0.25” to earn the only individual regional title among area athletes. Warsaw’s 1600-meter relay foursome of Rylee Burns, Sarah Kratzsch, Ali Barkey, and Wini Barnett crossed the finish line first in 4:05.49. 0.14 seconds behind runner-up Northridge.

The Tigers’ 80.5 team points were second to Culver Academies’ title-worthy 97 points. Penn finished third with 74 points. Whitko (10th place, 21 points), Wawasee (11), Manchester (9), and Triton (2) also scored in Tuesday evening’s regional.

Warsaw’s Joey Rastrelli qualified for state in three events: the 1600-meter run (2nd, 5:08.85), the 3200-meter run (3rd, 11:19.48), and ran a leg of the second-place Tiger 3200-meter relay (9:46.94) along with of teammates Emily Laput, Ava Knight, and Barnett.

Abby Sanner added a second-place discus throw of 138’9” and a third-place shot put distance of 37’11.5” to earn a ticket to Bloomington June 3. Wawasee’s Emma Yoder, whose 132’9” discus throw landed her in third place, will join Sanner.

Josie Niebbia will represent the Tigers in the pole vault after punching her state meet ticket by clearing a height of 10’3”.

Additional area qualifiers include Manchester’s Olivia Auler (3rd, 100-meter dash, 12.77 sec.), Whitko’s long jumper Emerson Harper (3rd, 16’8.75”), and Tiger high jumper Marin Hart (3rd, 5’3”). Hart will also wait for a call in case of a scratch among other state qualifiers in the 100-meter hurdles (4th, 15.73 sec.).

Area athletes will make the trip Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex, Indiana University, Bloomington where the pole vault will lead off the day’s and evening’s events at 3 p.m. Friday June 3. Tickets will be $12 per person.
