SYRACUSE – Offensive woes plagued Wawasee Tuesday.

The Wawasee girls basketball team struggled to score in stretches and notched 19 turnovers in 55-40 home loss to Columbia City.

“(City) is a team that pressures you from end to end consistently, and they’re quick,” said Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter.

The Lady Eagles (10-10) jumped out to a 10-2 lead before the Lady Warriors (3-14) battled back to trail 13-9 by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter, however, saw Wawasee take just four shots, and miss all of them, while hitting 6 of 6 from the stripe.

Columbia City, meanwhile, took advantage of Wawasee turnovers and scored 17 points to head into halftime with a 30-15 lead.

“That gap came back, and that ended up being the difference in the game,” Carpenter said.

Wawasee cut Columbia City’s lead to 10 in the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles pulled off a 10-1 run to finish the quarter and hold a 19-point lead to start the fourth.

“Columbia City took advantage of some of our mistakes in that third quarter, and they were able to push it back out,”?Carpenter said. “But, credit to my girls for being able to fight for 32 (minutes) tonight.”

Columbia City cruised to victory in the fourth. Lady?Eagles coach Amy?Shearer said fast-paced play was always part of the gameplan.

“We talked early about jumping on  teams early, trying to be the aggressor,” she said. “Getting easy points, defense, creating offense for us. Our kids did a great job tonight of playing passing lanes, being aggressive, getting on the boards and getting out and running.”

Wawasee’s Casey Schroeder scored a game-high 20 points, while Alaina Rongos led Columbia City with 16 points.

The Lady Warriors will host Elkhart Memorial Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup.
