BREMEN – On the power of finishing 1-2 in four events, Whitko won its second consecutive boys track sectional title Thursday night, beating Plymouth by 20 points.
Manchester was fifth, Tippecanoe Valley sixth and Triton 11th in the team standings.
The Wildcats put some distance between themselves and the Pilgrims when Walker Hobbs and Gavin Howard took the top two spots in the shot put, the next-to-last event completed in the meet.
Garrett Elder and Alex Wilson had a pair of 1-2 finishes, in the 100 and the long jump. Brady Weeks and Shad Ebbinghouse were the top-two finishers in the 300 hurdles.
Alex Morales was the sectional champ in the 110 hurdles.
“I am so happy for these guys,” said Whitko head coach Ron Cherry. “They’ve worked hard and remained motivated since February. Last week they won the TRC meet, and this week they were able to keep their intensity and win the sectional as well.
“We won five events tonight, but what really helped was that we finished first and second in four difference events. When you can score 18 points at a pop in four different events, that makes a world of difference.”
Elder, Weeks, Wilson and Gavin Powell advanced to the Warsaw Regional on Thursday with a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay. Conner Sherwin punched his ticket to the regional with a second-place finish in the discus, and Zach Freel advanced with his third-place effort in the high jump.
Others scoring points for Whitko were: Freel, third in the high jump and eighth in the 400; Wilson, fourth in the 200; Weeks, fourth in the 110 hurdles; and Howard, fifth in the discus.
