Swimming
A handful of local athletes competed at the Swimming State Finals this past weekend.
Warsaw’s Ian Wihebrink (100m Breastroke) and Jayce Sawyer (Diving) each earned top 10 finishes in the state, with Wihebrink finishing in seventh place in his event and Sawyer placing ninth. Wihebrink also swam a 21.45 in the consolation heat of the 50m freestyle and now owns the two best times in the race in school history.
Tippecanoe Valley was also represented at the State Finals, with swimmer Marcus Smith finishing 16th in the 200m individual medley.
The Times-Union would like to congratulate each of these athletes on wonderful seasons.
Boys Basketball
Mishawaka Marian at Tippecanoe Valley
Tippecanoe Valley fought hard and erased an early deficit but was unable to come away with a win against Mishawaka Marian Friday night. The Vikings lost a close game 58-53 to end the regular season with an 18-5 record.
Nolan Cumberland had 16 points to lead the Vikings. Tayde Kiser added 15 in support and Stephen Akase poured in 10 points to round out the top three scorers.
Valley begins sectional play Tuesday against John Glenn at Knox.
East Noble at Wawasee
Wawasee wrapped up its regular season with a win Friday night, defeating East Noble 62-46 at the Hardwood Teepee. Wawasee enters the postseason with a 9-13 record.
Collin Ziebarth led the way with a very nice night, scoring 25 points. The Everingham twins also finished in double figures, with Myles scoring 14 and Maddux adding 10.
Wawasee will play their first sectional game Tuesday night against host school NorthWood.
Manchester at Mississinewa
Manchester toughed out a win at Mississinewa Friday night, defeating the home team 51-40. The Squires head into the playoffs with a 17-5 record.
Gavin Betten had 16 points while Ethan Hendrix contributed 14. Tyler McLain scored eight. Manchester’s first sectional game is Wednesday against Bluffton at South Adams.
Triton at Knox
Triton dropped its regular season finale Friday night, losing 47-37 at Knox. The Trojans finish the regular season with a 12-10 record.
Cole Shively had 15 points to lead the way for Triton. Jacob Pitney scored nine points on three three-pointers. Triton hosts their sectional and will play their first game Wednesday against Argos.
Whitko at Lakeland Christian
Whitko and Lakeland Christian played a tough game in Winona Lake Friday night, with the Cougars emerging victorious with a 47-43 win. LCA enters the playoffs with an 18-5 record, while Whitko heads in with a mark of 5-17.
Seth Martin had 25 points to lead all scorers in the game, followed by 19 from Whitko’s Kyler Krull. Micah Martin had 10 points for LCA while Riley Harman added eleven for the Wildcats.
Whitko begins sectional play Tuesday night against Adams Central at South Adams. Lakeland Christian is off until Friday, when the team plays Lakewood Park Christian.
