WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian Academy added two new members, Amy Helmuth (Doron) and Jay Widman, to its Cougar Hall of Fame during homecoming activities recently.

Doron, a 1996 graduate, played volleyball, basketball and softball for the Lady Cougars. As a middle school student, she was a member of the 1991 Indiana Christian Athletic Association (ICAA) basketball and softball state championship teams.

She was named ‘Best Defensive Player’ or ‘Best Offensive Player’ all four years of her high school volleyball career, and scored over 1,000 career points in basketball. Doron was a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) basketball state runner-up team her sophomore year.

As a senior, she was named Lakeland Christian Academy’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ in volleyball and basketball, and the overall female Senior Athlete of the Year.

Widman was boys soccer head coach for five seasons, (1984-1988) and later returned to the pitch as the head girls mentor four more seasons, 2003-2006.

Widman’s first year at the helm saw the Cougars finish as the 1984 ICAA state soccer runners-up. The next three seasons would end with Lakeland Christian as ICAA state soccer champions.

Coach Widman was recognized as the 1985 Northern Indiana ICAA Coach of the Year and later honored as the Indiana All-Star coach, leading the Hoosier all-stars to the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) title.

Widman returned to the coaching ranks in 2003, and coached the LCA Lady Cougars varsity soccer team for four years. Coach Widman returned yet again, this time as the boys varsity soccer assistant coach under then-head coach Joel Popenfoose, and helped lead the Cougars to the Indiana Christian School Tournament (ICST) state championship in 2010.
