Lakeland Christian Wins Hoosier Plains GBB Opener

WINONA LAKE – Playing their season opener and the first conference game in program history, the Lakeland Christian Academy Lady Cougars cruised to a 61-18 win over South Bend Career Academy Friday night.

LCA, a member of the Hoosier Plains Conference along with South Bend Career Academy, led 17-5 after one quarter of play, 38-8 at halftime and 54-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Senior guard Hope Fancil led LCA with 19 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists.

Senior forward Jess Slone finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Torie Calizo chipped in with 10 points, five boards, two assists and two steals.

In all, 11 players got into the scoring column for the Lady Cougars.

LCA will be in action again Tuesday when it hosts Churubusco.

Wawasee Downs Westview

SYRACUSE – The Wawasee Lady Warriors led by five points after the first quarter Friday night and eventually pulled out a 42-34 win over Westview.

The hosts led 7-2 after one quarter of play, 23-15 at halftime and 33-26 at the end of the third quarter.

Hannah-Marie Lamle tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds for Wawasee, while Kabrea Rostochak ended up with 13 points and nine boards. Aubrey Kuhn chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

Also scoring for Wawasee were Morgan Adkins (3), Caitlin Wortinger (2) and Danielle Jenkins (1).

Wawasee is now 2-2 on the season and will host Lakeland Tuesday.

Junior Ashya Klopfenstein led Westview with a game-high 20 points.

Lady Eagles Pull Away In Second Half, Beat Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY – Columbia City took a 20-13 lead into halftime, then rolled to a 48-18 non-conference girls basketball win at Whitko Friday night.

Ellie Snep paced the Lady Wildcats with eight points, and Kayla Schipper added six for Whitko.

"I was proud of our continued effort and willingness to go all out," said Whitko coach Rick Bragg. "We are seeing some positive results that do not always show up on the scoreboard"

Whitko (0-3) travels to Whitley County rival Churubusco (0-1) for a non-conference game. The junior varsity contest tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. today.
