WINONA LAKE – Grace College’s baseball team picked up a doubleheader split with the Spring Arbor Cougars on Monday afternoon.

The Lancers (10-11, 4-4 Crossroads League) dropped the first game of the day 19-11 but bounced back with an 8-5 win in the second game.

In the first contest, Grace fell behind 8-0 in the first inning before rallying their way back.

Austin Carr drove in Jeff Pawlik in the home-half of the first, before Grace exploded for six runs in the second inning.

Pawlik crossed the plate for the second time in as many innings after blasting a three-run home run that drove in Cal Curiel and Cameron Woehnker.

Chris Griffin got in scoring position after swiping second base, and Austin Carr drove him in on the next pitch.

Carr and Alex Rich each scored to finish off the six-run second inning as Grace whittled Spring Arbor’s (8-6-1, 4-4 CL) lead down to 8-6.

The Cougars and Lancers were scoreless over the next two innings before the offense again sprang to life.

Spring Arbor hit a two-run shot in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-7. Pawlik drove in three runs in the bottom of the fifth with a double that pulled Grace to within one.

The Cougars responded with eight runs in the sixth to take a stranglehold on the game. Griffin added a run in the eighth after hitting a sacrifice fly that drove in Patrick Danforth.

Grace couldn’t get any closer however and would fall 19-11.

In game two the Cougars looked to continue their offensive barrage, scoring three runs in the top of the first.

After earning a pair of walks, Grace drew even when Rich hit a three-run home run. Sam Newkirk gave the Lancers their first lead of the afternoon after he immediately followed Rich’s homer with a bomb of his own.

Isaiah Herbster worked three straight scoreless innings in the middle frames, and Pawlik added another RBI as Grace entered the fifth with a 5-3 lead.

Spring Arbor scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, but Josh Cosme hit a no doubter three-run home run in the fifth to secure the win.

Herbster picked up his first win of the season, and Mason Meyer recorded the save.

The Lancers will travel to Huntington next weekend for a four-game series with the Foresters.
