GOSHEN – The Lakeland Christian Academy Lady Cougars will continue their season, as they defeated Bethany Christian 39-34 in an overtime contest Tuesday night.

LCA advanced to Friday’s Class 1A Sectional 52 semifinals against Hamilton.

Already having played the host Bruins twice  this season, with Bethany holding a 2-0 advantage, the Lady Cougars pulled away late in the extra stanza to seal the win.

After a slow start to begin the game, LCA (15-8) found itself down 8-0 early in the second period. Senior Jessica Slone broke into the scoring column for the LCA, hitting two free throws.

After a quick basket by Bethany (12-11) and one by junior Anna Reimink for the Lady Cougars to make the score 10-4, LCA went on an 8-2 run to take the game into halftime.

During the third quarter, LCA went on a 15-4 run to push the lead to 27-16 over the Lady Bruins.  Senior Hope Fancil tallied six of her team-high 12 points in those eight minutes. The veteran sank two treys in the final minute of the quarter to give the Lady Cougars the 27-16 lead.

“We had so much momentum and so much energy from those shots,” said LCA coach Allison Kauffman.

In the fourth quarter, things started to slip away from the Lady Cougars. They allowed Bethany to capture six steals, and junior Anya Kauffman netted nine of her game-high 16 points.

“We sped up and got rushed and weren’t being strong with the ball,” Kauffman said. “(We) knew they were going to be aggressive, if we were just patient, we could’ve prevented those mistakes.”

Bethany ended the quarter on a 8-0 run to push the game in overtime.

Reimink found herself at the free throw line early in the extra frame for LCA. She hit the first shot, but missed the second. She would go on to score three points in overtime to lift the team to the win.

Senior Brady Gross added three points and Fancil two points  in overtime for the Lady Cougars to earn the win.

Reimink showcased her defensive skills on the opposite end of the court, nabbing four steals and held Bethany’s point guard to 0 of 8 shooting from the field. Fancil made her presence known on the other end of the court as well, blocking five shots.

This is LCA’s second overtime game of the season, also winning 43-40 over Elkhart Christian on Dec. 16. The Lady Cougars have lost three games this year by two points or less.

“It was awesome to see how those close games have prepared us for this moment, said Kauffman. “For the girls to pull through and learn from those that we didn’t pull off earlier in the season was great to see.”

The Lady Cougars will take their six-game win streak to the sectional semifinals. LCA will play Hamilton on Friday at 6 p.m. The two schools played back on Dec. 2, with the Lady Cougars winning 77-18.
