A broken gas main sliced during construction work near Center Street and Maple Avenue in Warsaw caused a shutdown of traffic on several nearby streets east of the downtown for several hours Tuesday.

The leak was repaired by early afternoon and traffic was expected to reopen, according to a news release from the city that was issued at 1:14 p.m.

The leak, which workers and nearby residents could hear from nearly a block away, occurred around 10 a.m. and Center Street between between Scott and Bronson streets was immediately closed.

Market and Main Streets, which run parallel to Center, were also soon closed as a precaution.

Nearby residents were evacuated and the city encouraged those affected to  go to the Pete Thorn Center, 800 N. Park Avenue for shelter.
