Kosciusko County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Tyler and Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine accepted a plaque from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The department was recognized for its efforts to promote safe boating on the lakes of Kosciusko County. The sheriff's department was presented with a plaque commending the efforts at a recent Conservation Officer District Commander Meeting in Warsaw.

25 Years

John Daffara, Warsaw, was named Kosciusko County United Way Volunteer of the Year on April 5. He received the honor in Indianapolis recently. He has been a member of the Kosciusko County United Way Board since 1985. He's served in a number of positions while on the board and was appointed to the state grant committee in 1990. He's served in a number of positions while on the board and was appointed to the state grand committee in 1990. As a member of the committee, he helped secure money for the county.

An amendment designated to give counties the choice whether or not to allow mini-marts to sell alcohol passed in a State House of Representatives vote April 4.

50 Years
The Kosciusko County 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest will be Friday, April 15. Beef cattle will be judged at the Luther Vance farm in Monroe Township. Bill Langohr near Pierceton will furnish the steer class for the contest. The breeding and market classes of sheep will be judged at the Rudy Ross Farm near Sidney. Two classes of swine will be judged at the Gordon Tuttle farm, Route 1, Warsaw.

Nelson O. Ned Crew Jr., 29, fourth-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, died at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne on April 14. Death was due to complications following a three-month illness.

75 Years

Insurance of $46,000 in bonds for the remodeling of the Atwood high school and for the construction of a new gymnasium has been approved by the Prarie township advisory board. The advisory board voted to issue bonds for $22,000 for remodeling, repair and equipping the present high school building and $20,000 for construction of a building on the school grounds. A petition was filed recently with Harley D. Person, township trustee, requesting that bonds be issued to cover the expense of the project. The petition was approved by the advisory board on April 1.
