School officials at Jefferson Elementary have a beneficial program that boosts reading skills. School librarian, Mona Steiner, started the program, "Hand and Hand Together We Can," in spring 1998, and has been amazed at the results.

    County Councilwoman Charlene Knipsel and County Commissioner Avis Gunter were welcomed to the Area Plan Commission Wednesday, Jan. 4.

    Tiffany Polston Smith, daughter of Randy and Rachael Polston, Warsaw, sang the National Anthem prior to the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals game in the RCA Dome Jan. 1. The field had been covered with a U.S. stadium flag.

Syracuse residents with a phone number prefix of 457 and 856 now have the 911 emergency phone system, following a ceremony Tuesday, Jan. 1, to activate the service. Syracuse is the second part of the county to receive service; Warsaw customers were put on the line two months ago. Syracuse police dispatcher is Sheryl Bartman.

    Plans for a road that will link Lakes Village and Woodland Mall shopping centers (Kmart and Walmart) in Warsaw were announced Thursday, Jan. 3, that will run parallel to the highway, south of U.S. 30. Property between will be developed for commercial use by the new owners, New World Corp., Kendallville. Officials were confident the road would be open in 1991.

The 1966 Warsaw area telephone directory is now being compiled, according to D.R. Trease, district manager for United Telephone Company of Indiana. The last day to make changes or obtain listings is Thursday, Jan. 6. For the first time, the directory will include listings for United's newly acquired exchange at Millersburg in Elkhart County, which serves approximately 850 telephones.

    The merger of Lake City Bank in Warsaw and Commercial State Bank of Silver Lake is expected the first of March, according to Herbert Robinson and Bruce Wright, president and vice president of Lake City Bank; and George Summe and Robert Zimmer, president and cashier of Silver Lake Bank.

    Weighing in of 4-H calves in the beef club, to be sponsored for the fourth year by the Silver Lake Lions' Club, will be Wednesday, January 1. The scales of the Silver Lake elevator will be used.

    The 21st field artillery battalion, consisting of 138 vehicles, passed through Warsaw on State Road 15 on Thursday, December 19, en route from Fort Knox, Ky. to Fort Custer, Mich.

    Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Rohrer, newlyweds of northwest of Warsaw, were given an old-fashioned belling Thursday, Dec. 12, by a group of friends and relatives. Mrs. Rohrer is the former Norma Floor, of Akron. Also belled were Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Konkle, of near Bourbon.
