The Times-Union on Tuesday published what turned out to be a fictitious birth announcement.

The announcement appeared on page 6A, the Lifestyles page. The handwritten birth announcement was submitted via the mail on Monday. There was no return address.

It listed the mother of the newborn as Kristin Elizabeth Quick, of Fishers. Quick is not married and did not give birth to a child.

The item, purportedly submitted by Quick’s mother, also listed Quick’s local relatives as parents and grandparents, including great-grandfather Bill Landrigan, a longtime Warsaw schools teacher and administrator.

Landrigan’s volunteer work in the community led him to be named the Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce’s Man of the Year in January 2012.

It appears the intent was to embarrass the family by attributing an out-of-wedlock birth to their daughter.

The letter has been turned over the Warsaw Police Department. The Times-Union regrets the role it played in this matter.
