Ruth Una Krause Paige will celebrate her 95th birthday on Monday.

Ruth was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in the greater New York area until her late ’30s. The day before Ruth’s birth, the doctor came to the house, drove Ruth’s mother to the hospital and waited a day for the baby to be born. The doctor was sure the patient would never get to the hospital on her own, once the predicted massive snowstorm began. Sure enough, Ruth was born the next day, and her father had to walk along the trolley lines in the storm to find his way to Bayridge Hospital to see his firstborn.

Ruth was quickly nicknamed “Billy” by her parents as they were positive that the baby would be a boy named after father, William Krause.

Ruth was married to Jim Paige on Valentine’s Day 1943 in Durham, N.C., where Jim was serving in the Army during World War II. After the war, Ruth worked in her husband’s insurance agency until the sale of the business and a move to the Midwest.

Once Jim graduated from Grace Seminary, they went on to start many churches. Locally, Jim was the first pastor of Syracuse Baptist Church, which later became what is now called Wawasee Heights Baptist. After each church was established, they moved on to start another. Ruth served as a pastor’s wife in nearly 20 locations throughout the Midwest and eastern United States.

Widowed after 56 years of marriage, Ruth is an active member of Pleasant View Bible Church, Warsaw. She was “Our Lady of Kosciusko” in 2007 and has served in many volunteer capacities in the community.

Ruth has three children: Col. (retired) Kurt (wife Carol) Paige, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Darlene (husband Col. [retired] R. Gary) Tregaskis, Johnson City, Tenn.; and Lynn (husband Terry) Howie, Winona Lake. Ruth has five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. As matriarch of five generations, Ruth takes great joy and pride in her family relationships.

Ruth’s kind, gentle and generous spirit has garnered her many friends who call her an amazing woman.

Ruth’s children will honor her birthday with a special dinner and a celebration open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Grace Village Assisted Living Activities Room off Sunset Drive, Winona Lake. The presence of Ruth’s friends will be her cherished gifts.

Cards may be sent to Ruth at 337 Grace Village Drive, Apt. 502, Winona Lake, IN 46590.
