Winona Lake — Kent Brown was the club level winner for Lake City Toastmasters in the Toastmasters International Speech Contest.

Second place went to Richard “Doc” Brungardt, while David Wolfe was third.

Each contestant delivered a 5- to 7-minute speech and was judged on content, organization and delivery.

As club winner, Brown will represent Lake City Toastmasters at the Area 13 contest Saturday. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the Nappanee Center, 302 W. Market St., Nappanee

Club contests are designed to challenge members’ speaking skills and give them opportunities to speak in different venues.

Brown has been a member of Lake City Toastmasters since October 2017, and earned his Competent Communicator award in December. This is the starting point for some members; it includes a series of 10 speeches which allow you to work on oral presentation skills including managing nervousness, using gestures and vocal intonations.

Some members join Toastmasters to get over their fear of public speaking, but Brown had a different reason. “I joined up with Toastmasters to further my goal of becoming a motivational speaker,” he said. “I've learned how to speak on a more professional level in my personal life, at work and in my Toastmasters group.”

Brungardt has been a Toastmasters member since 1991. “Every time I participate in a speech contest and attend Toastmasters, it’s always a supportive, positive experience with an accomplishment recognition that I really like,” he said. “...  I’m very proud of Kent and excited to see where this first big step leads him. He may be our next world champion of public speaking!”

Lake City Toastmasters has been meeting since June 1989. The club meets at 5:30 p.m. the first and third Thursday of the month on the Grace College campus in the William Male Center, Room 126. Everyone is welcome.
