Thieves Target Four Area Churches
Byline info is not available
Friday, August 21, 2009 9:35 PM
Four area churches reported break-ins Friday morning, and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department is investigating each incident.
Workers from the North Winona Church of the Brethren, Valley Springs Fellowship Church and New Life Christian Church, all of Warsaw, and the Calvary Baptist Church of Oswego each reported being the victims of burglaries early Friday morning.
The first break-in was discovered at the North Winona Church of the Brethren, CR 100N, Warsaw, around 6 a.m. Friday when a day-care worker discovered a cabinet open and glass broken in the building.
Various cabinets and desks were rifled through, but so far nothing is believed to have been stolen from the church.
Valley Springs Fellowship Church, CR 175E, Warsaw, was the next burglary that was reported. Shortly before 7 a.m., a worker at the church saw that a window in her office had been broken.
Again, desks and cabinets were disturbed, and cash was taken from multiple areas in the building.
Around 7:30 a.m., a break-in was reported at New Life Christian Church, CR 325E, Warsaw.
A broken window was discovered in an office, and the cabinets and desks were open and gone through. Nothing was reported missing at the church.
The fourth break-in was reported just after 8 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church of Oswego, Armstrong Road, Leesburg.
When workers arrived at the church Friday morning, they discovered a rear door unlocked. As the worker went into the office, she discovered the area was ransacked and there were pry marks on a safe.
The suspect(s) took medication out of a prescription bottle as well as cash that was found in the church.
The incidents remain under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crimes should contact the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department at 574-267-5667.
