A 17-year-old Nappanee girl was hit Tuesday morning by a vehicle while she was riding a bicycle, and a Goshen man was taken into custody by the afternoon in connection to the hit-and-run crash.

Gerardo Fuentes Cortez, 49, was charged with leaving the scene of a serious bodily injury crash.

The vehicle originally was unknown. Evidence collected from the scene suggested the vehicle in question was a 2011-14 black Chevy Cruze with damage to the front-passenger side, according to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses at the scene described the vehicle in question as a maroon Chevrolet Impala.

The incident occurred at about 4:36 a.m. Tuesday near 71500 CR 7, Nappanee, about a half mile north of the city limits, according to an ECSO crash news release.

Cortez was traveling south on CR 7, north of CR 52, in the southbound lane.

The bicyclist – Kaitlin Troyer – was riding south on CR 7 in front of Cortez’s vehicle in the southbound lane. The vehicle then hit the bicycle, according to the ECSO release. The vehicle and Cortez were not at the scene of the accident when officers arrived.

Troyer was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by helicopter for complaints of pain throughout her entire body.
