Hair Cuttery has over 800 locations across the country, but is very selective of where it opens a new salon, according to Karen Ohlenkamp, regional leader.

Wednesday morning, the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Hair Cuttery’s grand opening at its new location at 562 W. CR 300N, Warsaw, along Ind. 15, near Kohl’s.

“We don’t open a ton of new salons. We’re very selective of where we open. We do a lot of research before we go in,” Ohlenkamp said.

Hair Cuttery is the largest privately owned chain of hair salons in the United States, she said. It’s about 45 years old and based out of Virginia.

“This salon in particular is part of the south Chicago region. There’s north and south Chicago. We have about 132 salons between the north and south Chicago region. Warsaw is now our furthest salon east; and our furthest salon south would be the Peoria area – Jacksonville, Peoria, Springfield area,” Ohlenkamp said.

Hair Cuttery can be found in the city of Chicago and there’s even a salon in Wisconsin.

As to why Warsaw was chosen for a Hair Cuttery, Ohlenkamp said because “Northwest Indiana has been a very strong district for us historically. And we’re saturated in the Northwest Indiana region, so what we’re doing is we’re branching out. We’ve done very, very well in Michigan City, LaPorte, South Bend, Mishawaka and we’re just stretching our boundaries to Warsaw and hopefully working our way toward Fort Wayne and potentially south into Lafayette and some of the other cities in Indiana.”

She said Hair Cuttery is a full-service hair salon, though it doesn’t do nails or makeup. It does do everything from hair extensions to shampoo/cut/blow dries on men, women and children. It offers a full line of color, relaxers, perm services and “all types of deep treatments and chemistry or conditioning treatments and things like that. So a full-service hair salon for men, women and children.”

For this week, for the grand opening, it’s offering a half-off haircut special. It has specials every six weeks and its promotions change every six weeks. It also offers retail specials every six weeks.

“The thing about Hair Cuttery that differentiates us is, we’re all about the people. We’re all about the people that work for us. The stylists are at the heart of everything we do. We consider ourselves the love company, or the people company, because we know that people are what drive our business, so we welcome everybody to come into the salon and see who we are,” Ohlenkamp said.

Hair Cuttery is considered to be a chain because it has 800 stores nationwide, but she said it has “a privately owned small-town mentality,” she said.

Salons typically start with eight stylists, but in some locations may have as many as 20 or 30 stylists.
