WINONA LAKE – Blake Staton won the Indiana Criminal Justice Association Commissioner’s Award for teacher of the year in the northern region.
Staton has been teaching high school equivalency courses at the Indiana State Prison, Michigan City, for four years.
Staton is employed through Grace College, which holds the contract for education services at northern Indiana prisons.
“Staton is a master of his craft,” John Hendricks, director of correctional education at Grace College, said. “We usually have new teachers observe Blake to see his teaching methods.”
Staton competed against around 36 teachers in the northern area. Hendricks said Grace has teachers at five Indiana prisons and a correspondence course available at one more.
Hendricks said it’s about a ministry for those at the college.
“Incarcerated males are a forgotten population. What we are doing is trying to reform them by giving them a chance at education,” he said.
